Cable television

Would anyone know if the cable television provided by some hotels/apartments in Bangkok have sports channels that show English Premier League matches? I am a huge Liverpool fan and if I can help it, don't want to miss any matches when I am on holiday in Bangkok in February 2011. Thanks

i'm not a soccer fan so i haven't paid much attention to what soccer games are on tv, but if you go to the pickled liver on soi 11, suk, they have a very lively soccer fan group, and there always seems to be soccer on tv. i think the owner is a manchester fan.

nice fellow, he put my uh banner alongside the many soccer banners that grace is walls, and beams.

My first thought was the Pickled Liver...

There are sports channels on the cable TV, but I'm not a sports fan, so I can't tell you what they are showing.

Truevision, the sole cable provider in Thailand, shows all of the Premiere league matches live. They have 3 sport channels dedicated to Premier league telecast but most hotels or apartments only carry one or two of the sport channels and usually they are ESPN or Starsports who don't show the majority of the premier league matches.

This info was emailed to me by one of our on-the-scene guys in Bangkok. Just so you know...

Thanks so much for your help guys. I will certainly go check out the Pickled Liver (hope my husband comes along). He doesn't really enjoy soccer

I'm currently at the Centre Point Silom in Bangkok, and my TV has four sports channels -- ESPN, Star Sport, True Sport 1, and True Sport 2. Again, I don't know what they show.

And funny the Pickled Liver should come up. It's 6:15 PM here in Bangkok, and I was finally headed to the PL. I took a shower and changed, then looked outside and it is POURING rain, so I'm on hold right now. Hopefully it won't last long, but I just may have to pop in to the Shangrila or over to the Bamboo Bar at the Oriental for something to tide me over.

Are you based in UK? Do you subscribe to Sky Sports? If you do, you can use your log-in details to get Sky live matches on your laptop with wifi or wired internet connection. They block non-UK IP addresses, but you can easily get around it by subscribing to VPN (virtual personal network) through such operator as http://www.my-private-network.co.uk/. You can also watch BBC Match of the Day through BBC iPlayer.

Those programmes were from last month! Arsenal drew through Reyna's own goal in final minutes!

Just to add to my reply that Sky will allow free online access to live programmes until the end of 2010. No announcement about what they may do next year.

Oinkoink, I thought you might be a guy, since you asked about sports. Sorry... Oh well.... your DH would enjoy the PL even if he doesn't like sports. If you go there, ask for Maeng, and tell her that you are my friends from the internet. She is always very welcoming! And her Thai food is THE best!!! Ask about her garlic shrimp; pad Thai is also good, as is her mango and sticky rice, I could go on and on. If you like American style chili, she makes a great chili too!

Patrick, sorry to hear about the rain. Hope it clears up for you.

Carol

Most Hotels will have "satellite" TV - however if you end up with one of the regional cable networks - you may be disappointed.
they mostly have pirated material and such EL stations as BBC CNN are often withdrawn for a few months to let the heat die down.
So with football (Soccer), you need to ask at reception what sort of TV they have.

The rain didn't clear up, but I headed out anyway. Maeng greeted me with open arms when I mentioned Carol and Brad (and she asked if I knew Ken).

I ordered a beer. She asked if I wanted something to eat, and I said "yes, whatever you're cooking". So out came the garlic shrimp and then Chicken Tika Masala with garlic nan. Delicious. Carol, I think you're going to get a picture of Maeng and I together tomorrow.

Thanks for that great news, Patrick! I just sent Maeng an email telling her to look out for my internet friend(s) who might be coming in soon! I'm so glad you got out, even in the rain. She is the sweetest, dearest, hardest working Thai I know!

I will be looking for the photo!

Patrick,
If you make it to the PL again, let Maeng know in advance. She can cook you something special if she has enough lead time to go to the market. Let her know what kinds of food you like and she will take it from there.

Sorry I missed you in BKK this time. I was at the PL in the early hours Monday before I got on my flight.

Brad, Maeng told me she things PL is the ONLY place you've ever eaten in Bangkok! Carol, did you get your pics from her today? I did along with you two eating disgustingly rich desserts somewhere. LOL

Meanwhile she and a Brit at the bar by me were having a long discussion about how unhappy she is -- problems with the boss, and how she wants her own place. Hope I'm not "talking out of school" here. And she was raving about what a wonderful person you are, Carol. Suddenly it clicked -- was she the one you took to Chiang Mai with you one time?

Yes, I have taken Maeng with me to Chiang Mai more times than I can count now. I've also taken her to Krabi and Samui. And yes, I got the pics. Looks like a good time.

Maeng would like to have a bit of a change in her situation, but at this point we don't know what is going to happen with the bar (in the next year or so). I won't go into it here, but I hope the situation gets resolved. She is such a sweet and hard-working person... I want only the best for her. I think it keeps her spirits up when my internet friends come and ask her to cook for them.
