Buying a phone card in China?

I need to call the US once I'm in China. The hotels tell me if I use their phone, it will cost about $1/minute. How do I go about trying to buy a phone card within China to use on the hotel phone to
call US cheaper? Where do you find these? Is it worth trying to buy a cell phone that is compatible with China to call the US?

Thanks!

1) If you are a member of Sam's club, you can purchase prepaid AT&T phone card. When I check the rate a year ago, it was around 31 cents/min calling back US from China . If you get AT&T prepaid cards from non Sam's Club, rates would just be higher.

2) You can purchase prepaid phone card in the US from a number of websites. At <ecallchina.com> where the rate is 17 cents/min calling back to US from China. I personally have no experience with this card.

3) I think your hotel conceirge can help you to get a prepaid phone card while in China. But I'm afraid the prompting, while using this card, will be in Chinese.

4) You can get prepaid phone cards in the US to call China at very low rates of 3.5 - 5 cents/min using 800 access. You initiate your call to US in a Chinese hotel by paying the first minute of $1 and the other party in the US can call you right back.

Actually, phone cards with ENGLISH instructions are readily available in China. In fact, the instructions are in both English and Chinese on back. Rates for calls back to US are very cheap. Interestingly, they were even on sale in the gift shop of the Hilton in Shanghai where the hotel could make a ton of money on calls. They come in a variety of denominations. Work by calling a special number a using the PIN on the card itself. Don't worry, you'll have no trouble finding them.

Hi,

Been in China for quite sometime now, and so far things are great here! I would also like to recommend Net Callback (www.netcallback.com). It is a company here in China that allows you to make international calls for only 6 cents USD per minute. Good thing about it too is that the service is prepaid! You can really save your money with this service. Check it out and see for yourself.
