Bullet train in China
#4
Have you considered taking the night train? I've taken it twice, back in the early 2000s. The second time I shared a soft sleeper with a man who turned out to be president of a local university and his wife, who offered me a ride to my hotel. According to seat61 there are now deluxe soft sleepers on the Beijing-Xi'an route, so you would not need to share if you didn't want to. I agree that the scenery is more interesting further west..
