Yes, as Craig says, it is one pass per person. Pause and consider whether the one-day pass makes sense for you. It takes something like 4 or 5 trips in a day for the pass to be cost effective.
We just buy a stored value card and add to it as necessary. But if you are making many trips each day on the Skytrain, the one day pass makes sense.

The stored charge card is the way to go if you're going to use the BTS a lot. Can't remember the exact name of it, but they have signs at the ticket booth. I've still got one in my wallet I'll be using on Friday.
If the guard isn't watching, you can hand a single card back to your partner, but it's only a couple $$ so do it the right way.

I always buy a BTS card my first day in BKK, usually for about 300-400 baht. It lasts for several days, depending on how much I travel on the skytrain. The skytrain is my usual method for getting around, so it's nice to not have to stop and buy a day pass each day I'm there.
I don't think there is any specific "name" for this card. Just tell the person at the counter that you want a 300b/400b ticket. When you pop it into the machine to "enter/exit" the BTS station, it will tell you how much is left on the card.

Unless things have changed in the year since I was last in BKK, with regards to BTS tickets, I've always gone up to the counter with my 400b and asked for a ticket with that amount of money on it and they've handed it over. If I am paying a deposit, I never knew it. My ticket is never good for one year. It expires within about two weeks.
I'll be back in BKK in a couple of weeks and will try to do just as I've always done. I guess I'll find out if things have changed....

Things have changed in the 1 year since you were there. If you weren't buying the stored value ticket, then no, you weren't paying a deposit. For your 400 baht, you can buy the 20 trip/30 day pass. All the details can be found here.
