Brad, I'm glad you said that because, like Bob, my initial reaction was that I thought he overplayed the unrest, but then I had to remind myself I wasn't there.

I thought the 2nd half of the show was the best. I want to find both the floating markets he profiled, especially the one where you sit on the steps and order food.
I also want to go back to Chinatown next time I'm there as we've not been there for years and years.
What did I tell you about the pork? He always manages to get some in there.

I loved the Grandma in the train station. It's times like that where it really helps to have someone with you who can speak the language.

Nywoman,

I believe the music industry is the most aggressive at pursuing legal cases against copyright infringement. TV shows are covered by copyright laws as well.

get me an order of that suckling pig skin ASAP.

omg, i need to find a way to get to Thailand more often.

this spisode only served to remind me of my sick obsession. david and i were watching it together and i said, 'do you think there's any way we could make our way back there next year?' to which i was given a great big eye roll.

a boy can try, can he not?

Are you suggesting that they should not do it? Are you saying that it is wrong? Are you inferring that I should not be suggesting that they use vuze?
I am just unclear on the motives behind your comment. I would assume that no-one here would be naive to the legalities of copyright. I was just trying to inform Kathy of a way she could view this show without having a television.
It would also be illegal to record the show on a PVR and make a copy for someone else, would it not?

shanek,

I'm not here to be a part of one of your long debate. Just want to let my friends know that it's illegal.

FW - stop focusing on the past, start studying up on "babi guiling" - the Balinese version of suckling pig. Then there's the seafood. I had dinner on Jimbaran beach again last week, and it was as nice as ever, even though the wind was blowing the wrong way and I don't eat seafood.

Hanuman,
I have no issue with your "warning". I did feel that my good intentions of suggesting the use of what I perceive to be a valuable resource was turned into an offer of the "forbidden fruit" (Sorry for the drama Bill!)

I do find it a bit hypocritical coming from someone who advocated the use of Utorrent and asked for people to seed Sea Patrol season 3 in a previous post....Do as I say not as I do?...That was why I asked for you to make your stance clear. But if you dont want to "debate" it, that's fine

Bill- He should have included the MBK/Siam/Silom area. I knew he would effectively screw up this food trip. And btw, what the f is the deal with a food show doing a segment on Muay Thai?? What a bunch of stupid bullsh!t.

I was there when he aired that POS, btw. If he tried some of the places I ate in BKK, Phuket or Isaan, he would be on the ground in ecstasy. Instead, he's eating in places such as crappy Chinatown (don't get me on a roll about eating Chinese in Thailand! . Every large city has a Chinatown...I just don't get it..

Couple of people here posted that Bourdain should have visited MBK.

After looking at the photos here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:MBK_Bangkok_2.jpg

I can say that I would never want to visit MBK. But, I come from Chicago and have "done" place like that before.

Having said the above and after being in Bangkok this summer and participating in "Air Conditioning Crawls", I'd bet MBK has some strong air conditioning and cool temps.

Karen,
Trust me when I say that MBK is totally UNLIKE any mall in Chicago or anywhere else in the USA. MBK is a real gem. Bangkok Malls that you could find in any city would be the likes of Paragon, Emporium, Central World, Gaysorn... etc. You will look for a very long time before you ever see anything that resembles MBK!

Next time you go to BKK, if you should return, do give it a look. Yes, it has AC, but it isn't turned up all that strong. Some places in BKK you wish you had a sweater or jacket, but I've never felt that way at MBK.

Karen, some here are MBK fans, some are not. Carol is a fan, I am not. But I think we would all agree that there is nothing like MBK in any US city. It is undeniably Thai. The wikipedia photo gives no sense of the place.

Thank you for your suggestion and although MBK seems not to be, "up our alley" who knows, we'll might check it out next time.

Having said that, we did cringe when we passed by the Siam Square area wondering what happened to the somewhat "quaint" area we remember from 1999.

People's tastes are crazy. We lasted only five minutes at the Airport Plaza in Chiangmai, which is probably tame compared to MBK, but were able to crawl around the super heated narrow street of Yaowarat Road (Chinatown) for hours over a couple of days.

Actually, that might have been a pretty stupid move.

Airport Plaza in Chiangmai is much more typical of malls elsewhere in the world. MBK is one of a kind.

If you like markets, you should try some of the narrow super hot and crowded ones around the China Town area. A particular favorite of mine is Pahurat. I also love to go to JJ Mall and Chatuchak, the weekend market.
