Early morning is generally recommended as that is when people are busy. Late afternoon, they will be relaxing, maybe sleeping inside. If you just want a run along the river, take the Skytrain to Saphan Taksin, and walk towards the river when you get off. Get on the tourist boat along the river, 18 baht earlier this year, getting on and off when you want. 20 stops I think.

I prefer to do it late in the afternoon, when i'm hot and tired from an active day. We grab a cool drink, and hire a boat and enjoy the scenery.
It's starting to cool down a little by then,so I find it more comfortable.

I agree with Craig, that Larium sometimes causes hallucinations,I used it in Africa 3 years ago and it did, I just now came back from another trip to Africa and used Malarone... just gave me a bit of dizziness when getting up at night.. other than that all was fine...

I would NOT recommend an early morning klong tour. That is what we did last February and there was virtually no activity. Consensus on this board is that late afternoon works well and that there is plenty of activity. The river and canal breezes have a cooling effect as well.

Since I stay along the river I take the water taxis frequently. There is no reason to take the tourist boat - part of the reason I take the water taxis is to mix with the locals.

The OP asked about the best time for a klong tour, not a river tour - whether you take the tourist boat or not doesn't matter because the river taxis do not go into the klongs.

You are right, Craig, I should have been specific. I was responding to kaneda's recommendation for the tourist boat. In no way should either the water taxi or the tourist boat be considered a substitute for a klong tour.

The best time for a klong tour is in the mid-afternoon. It is much cooler on the water and there is plenty of activity. The kids are home from school and many are playing in the water.
