Hi Aby -

I've done both and enjoyed both. Shotover Jet is basically a thrill ride, and quite a bit shorter than the Dart River jetboat safari.

Dart River is a 1/2 day affair with guided commentary, gorgeous scenery and a few jetboat spins tossed in the mix. Definitely worth it if the weather gods are smiling.

We did the Dart jet, and the ride and scenery were very good. But you can drive out there by yourselves to see the scenery, and do the Shotover for the ride, which is much cheaper.

I'm sure you will enjoy whichever you choose.

We have only done the Dart River Safari. The Shotover was actually shut down for a few weeks in Dec-January due to problems with the boats.
We liked the Dart River Safari OK but I wouldn't say it is a must-do. Seeing Glenorchy is a must-do, though. As Jed stated, you can drive out there yourselves or you can take a different tour.
If you have spent time on speedboats (we had), the Dart River "jetboating" is basically riding up and down the river in a speedboat with an occasional 360 turn. It was difficult to take pictures of the gorgeous scenery while on the boat too.
