LA to Bangkok is a flights you should be able to find for about $600-700 economy class. The trick is getting the upgrade. If you have frequent flier miles on a star alliance (United, Thai, Singapore, etc) member, that's the cheapest way. (Though the cheapest tickets aren't upgrade-able with miles) Otherwise, you'll just have to shop around for a special deal on an upgrade (Thai often has those deals). From the West Coast, a RT ticket to Bangkok will be MUCH LESS than an around the world ticket (as well as much less hassle).

Years ago, tickets used to be less expensive in Bangkok. But these days, most tickets are "world priced" The exception to this are the small airlines that aren't carried on the major computer systems, like Biman (the Bangledeshi airline).

In LA, you'll find travel agencies that specialize in tickets to Bangkok who may be able to get you a reasonably priced upgrade. Check the Sunday LA Times.

Hi-
I live in LA and I bought my ticket from Star Tours in "Thai Town" in Hollywood. They had the best prices by far and saved me about $300 on the specific Cathay pacific ticket I wanted at that time. Call them.
