Best Hotels in Beijing, Xian, Hangzhou and Shanghai?

I just booked my air, now to plan the land. I did increase our trip to 14 days. I originally picked Peninsula for Beijing, Sheraton for Xian (though someone said there was a better one more centrally located), Shangri-La for Hangzhou, and JW Marriott for Shanghai. I wondered if there are others you have experience with that are maybe cheaper but just as good?

Thanks!

In Xian we stayed at the Sofitel on Remnim Square in December for an amazing rate. It is a very new hotel so rooms are in tiptop condition. Only slight drawback is it is large and can entail some walking. But it also has an amazing Jap restaurant where we had an outstanding meal.

In Beijing at least, four-star hotel prices are only going up and up and up. You'll have to shop around for the best deals - and a lot will depend on season. Right now, December - March is the low season, expect vast price increases in the fall and spring. The Peninsula is a very nice hotel with a great location. In the area, the Grand Hyatt and Raffles are also considered luxury properties. St. Regis, Kerry Center and China World are also very swish, but are a bit further from Tian'anmen (but closer to the Silk Market). Even further afield are the new Ritz-Carlton, Westin, and Intercon - but their location will not be great for sight-seeing. Good luck!

Thanks, I will look into these. Is Sofitel centrally located in Xian? Is that an American name? Never heard of it.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Sofitel is the top brand for France's Accor group, which is one of the larger in the world and probably largest in Europe, with Sofitel, Novotel, Mercure, Ibis, etc. They also own the Red Roof Inn and Motel 6 in N. America.

I've stayed at the Sofitel south of San Francisco and it's fabulous.

My parents have stayed at the Sofitel in Xian. It's right in one of the largest square (Remin Square = People's Square), and is really modern and luxurious. They call themselves the top hotel in all of western China, and so far no dispute about it.

We stayed Sheraton in Xian...not 4 star, rooms needed renovation, tho it was 5 years ago and they may have renovated, but good location near historic city wall.
Stayed in Palace in Beijing. Excellent and good location.

I stayed at the Shangri La in Hangzhou - it's supposed to be the best. It was very good!

You talked me into the Sofitel. Looks great!!

bkkmei, did you stay at the Shangri-La in Hangzhou lately? Someone posted that it's getting more rundown recently.

Thanks!

I just read the posts on Trip Advisor about Sofitel. Not too favorable. Do you know why?
