Bangkok-Tipping the limo driver

Hello All,

We leave for bangkok tomorrow. I have ACC scheduled to take us to our hotel from the airport. Is it customary to tip those limo drivers? Thanks.

No idea - but if you live in "limo land" you can afford it, so why not?
What's a few bucks to you?

It's not as if you are setting a precedent that will piss people off. What does piss people off is the introduction of a tip culture where there shouldn't be one.

But then maybe that's why you ask.

Exactly. For instance it's not customary in japan at all. And Limo just means "car set up ahead of time!". Many fodorites use this company. That's where I got their name.

You don't have to but if you want to a 100 Baht is considered a good tip.

100 baht sounds decent. Its a nice thing to do because they really make very little money and usually work very dilligently and are very nice as well.

Afterall...really...was all of that necessary? We all know that the word "limo" in Bangkok just means a car that has been prearranged. It's just a regular car. And even if it wasn't, the poster still needs his/her question answered.
I take the "limo" service regularly from the airport into Bangkok and I usually tip about 10% of the fare. I just use AOT which is located at the airport and tell them to give me the cheapest car. They're right there in baggage claim. Have fun. Happy Travels!

By "customary", if you mean "based on custom or tradition rather than written law or contract", then the answer for Thailand is "no".

If you mean "commonly practiced, used, or encountered; usual", then yes, it is customary to (American) tourists in Thailand to tip their driver (see the above posts).

This of course means that tips are being accepted, despite the custom. I suppose customs do evolve.

But if it is going to p.o. afterall then I highly recommend that you do tip the driver.
