Bangkok: Restaurant Suggestions Near JW Marriott

I will be traveling alone and am looking for some within walking distance of the JW Marriott Hotel in Bangkok at 4 Sukhumvit Road, Soi 2. Prefer Asian, with a garden or old Thai house feel to it. Maybe $10-25.

I would also suggest Kinnaree. Best way to get there is to walk along Sukhumvit to soi 8 (which is right by the escalator UP to Nana BTS).

If you like Lebanese, you can go into the basement of the shopping center attached (?) to JW. Basement level, bottom of the stairs, it's really excellent. Their hummus chicken is yummy!

Carol

(when are you going? I'll be at Adelphi the last couple of week sin Aug)

Carol - no set dates yet, just getting prepared ahead of time.

Any thoughts on Baan Khanitha on Sukhumvit Soi 23?

Yep, not really walkable, but an interesting walk back if you wanted to walk off your dinner. You could get there via the Skytrain from Nana to Asoke, take the subway underpass under Asoke (and if you wanted to view a little of "Fun City's" otherside, walk through Soi Cowboy on your way to Soi 23. About another 5 minutes up from there.

I prefer BK for lunch over dinner. Less crowded at lunch so the service is better. And I like the one on 23 better than Sathorn.

But...if you're fell the need for a steak, the JW Steakhouse serves up a very good one.

You are also within easy Skytrain ride from lots of good restaurants. One of my faves, Lemongrass, is just up the Soi from Emporium. It's located in an old teak house. Bob isn't fond of it from his one visit, but I've been eating there each trip for over a decade.

If you do visit Lemongrass, cut through the Emporium and go out the East exit on the ground floor. Lemongrass is basically across the street. Saves you from the heat/humidity/smog by walking there at ground level. They make an excellent Wing Bean Salad and Banana Flower Salad there. Price is similar to BK.

This is my neighborhood...so to get to Lemongrass....get on the skytrain and head east...Direction On Nut. Get off at Prom Phong skytrain station. When you exit the skytrain train you'll be facing south...Emporium MAll will be right there in front of you. You can actually see Lemongrass restaurant from the skytrain platform. It's on Soi 24...left side of the street...and soi 24 is one street to the left of the huge Emporium mall. The even numbered sois are south of Sukhumvit and the skytrain line and the odd numbered sois are north of Sukhumvit, so it's quite easy. The skytrain is very inexpensive and super easy to take.
I haven't eaten at Lemongrass Restaurant yet although I stay across the street at Emporium Suites, but close friends of mine have been eating there regularly for well over a decade and love the place. Happy Travels!

I know you said Thai food, and with a garden atmosphere, and Kinnaree is PERFECT for that, but another option with a variety menu (including Thai) is Zanzibar on soi 11. Very easy walk from JW. You can dine outside (in the "jungle" atmosphere) or inside in the AC. There is pleasant (not too loud)live jazzy music. Zanzibar does not get mentioned here, other than by me. I went there twice on my last BKK trip. Good enough to go again, IMO.

Kinnaree, by the way, has a really nice outdoor bar area as well as dining inside the house.

With these fine choices, looks like I might have to skip the walk and head for the Skytrain!

Any rants or raves about:

Ken! Glad to read that someone else enjoys dinner at Zanzibar! I'd walked by it many times (to get to Maeng's) but finally stopped there for dinner when I was with our fiends from Germany this past April. It was great!

See you in HNL.

I haven't eaten at Le Dalat yet.I plan to though. I have a big list of places to eat at that I still haven't gotten too over a 10-year period of going to BKK. Smiles. Happy Travels!

We went to La Dalat on one of our first trips to Bangkok, and have not gone back. Guess we aren't that into Vietnamese food... or maybe we didn't know what to order.

Thanks for all the great inputs.
Hard to pick with all the fine choices. I think I'll try the Kinnaree and Zanzibar first.
