Thank you all for your responses - some more lively than others!
I appreciate the direction provided and now am in debate (with myself) as to whether along the river or in the thick of things will be best for my beau and me. I'm going to post a separate question, including a couple hotels mentioned here and found in searching within my price range.

If you staying on the 'wrong' side of the river, then there are also BTS stations on that side which cut out the need of crossing Taksin Bridge by taxi...

That line was extended over to the 'wrong' side a few years ago.

When we stayed at the ibis on the "wrong" side a couple of years ago we had three options. The BTS at Krung Thonburi a 10 min walk or 5 min shuttle - the most convenient and quickest, a public ferry 10 mins and sometimes a 30 min wait or walk across the bridge to definitely not recommended!
