bangkok hotel confusion

Hello all:
we have read over the posts on this board and other reviews on other sites about Bangkok hotels and are totally overwhelmed. It is our first time to Thailand I should mention.
We are looking for a hotel that is well under the $100 CAD range per night including breakfast,(preferably in around 60 - 80$ Canadian per night) on or close to the Sukhumvit road in February for 3 nights at the beginning of our holiday and 3 nights at the end.
We want a pool as well. We are not backpackers but middle aged well travelled people. We want to be able to walk to restaurants and be fairly close to shopping and markets.
We have looked at the Zenith online and it looks fine. Any comments on this hotel or any other in the same vicinity.
regards,

if you look at the hua hin site, the hotels are listed by street location so that might help

www.huahin.20m.com

scroll down to other destinations and then choose bkk city from the drop down listing...

the centre point apartment might appeal to you and roughly they are in that price range...also the president hotels, of which there are several and some are on soi 11, sukhumvit i believe

Hi

My wife and I have stayed at Rembrandt Hotel on Sukhumwit. The hotel is located quite near Asok skytrain station so it was easy to get around. I have posted a trip report with picture from our trips to Thailand on my homepage gardkarlsen.com. Maybe you can find some useful information there

I don't know how much that is in U.S. dollars, but the Chateau de Bangkok by Sofitel...an Accor hotel is VERY nice. I just stayed there in August. I paid 1400Baht for a Jr. suite (U.S.$34.)...large walk-in closet,queen-sized bed, sofa, livingroom chairs, full kitchenette with a big apartment-sized fridge and large microwave along with stainless steel sink, counters, and lots of cabinets. Plus a coffee making area with coffee included daily and a nice size bathroom. Plus there are at least two restaurants on the premises and a beautiful rooftop swimming pool. This building is part hotel and serviced apartments. It's exactly 200 meters from the Ploenchit skytrain station which is on Sukhumvit and two stops from the main skytrain station at Siam or one stop from the Chitlom station where there are great malls and restaurants and where you can splurge and eat at the Five-star hotel restaurants if you'd like...the Erawan Hyatt and the Four Seasons are right near the Chitlom station...and also the Rajadamri station. The restaurants there are great. The hotel is on Ruam Rudee street which is the same street that a famous Thai restaurant is on called Baan Kranitha(sp?)...it's listed in major travel books and many people in this forum know the place. Plus, in the opposite direction on the sky train line you have the Emporium mall and its nice restaurants and nice restaurants all around that area. As for getting to some of the tourist sights just take the skytrain to Siam station...change trains and then head for the end line going in the direction of the river and get off at the last stop and then just take the public, and very cheap, river taxi boat up the river to the Grand Palace. It's VERY easy.Hope this has helped.Oh, a must is Nancy Chandler's map of Bangkok at nancychandler.net where you can order it. Happy Travels!

I'd recommend a $ medium hotel in Sukumvit at the beginning of your trip and then stay at a 5 star hotel in BKK at the end of your trip -- you can bid on Priceline.com for a 5 star hotel. Check out BiddingforTravel.com which shows recommendations on how to bid on Priceline.com. Although not in the Sukumvit area, the Shangri La Hotel near the River is a 5 star hotel and if you successfully bid for the hotel, then go to their website and sign up for the Golden Circle membership club and when you check in, you will have free buffet breakfast. Or you can still bid on a 5 star hotel in the Sukumvit area. Harmonique Restaurant in the River area has good reviews. The 5 star hotels this year has successful bids at $75 per night but it adds in service charge which is less than an additional $20? per night. Read BiddingforTravel.com very carefully on how to bid.

Medium $ hotel at beginning of trip and 5 star hotel at end of trip may even it out. And you will have luxury at end of trip. The bar at the Shangri La near the window corner near the River and looking at the boats at night was beautiful. The Shangri La is very near the skytrain and you can ride the train to go to shopping areas and just take a taxi to Suan Lum Night Market near Lumpini Park. If you buy a lot at the beginning of your trip, what I did before, I checked in one bag of luggage at the Shangri La and told them what day I was arriving at their hotel and it was stored for me with a smile and do not lose the luggage slip number receipt. And you can also check out other grand hotels near the Shangri La. I loved checking out the Oriental Hotel.

Since it is your first trip to Bangkok and you have 3 nights at beginning and 3 nights and the end of trip, you have the opportunity to stay in two different areas. We like reasonable, charming and well located hotels close to shopping. I liked the Shangri La because it gave us the opportunity to stay at a 5 star hotel at a reasonable cost, tho it was $55 per night + service charge on Priceline.com when we successfully bid on it last year. We had a wonderful trip last year.

It's a lot of fun researching. Have a wonderful trip!
