i remember going to the grand palace last year for the kings birthday, and got consumed by the massive crowd. almost never made it out.

We were in Bangkok on the occasion of the King's 50th anniversary as king. I have a gorgeous picture on my wall of the formal dress rehearsal for the introduction of his new barge (the first one in many years -- maybe even in 50 years). We'll be there again coincidentally for this procession. I e-mailed a friend who we will be spending our time in Thailand with and she didn't even know about this but, now that I told her, she has added it to our itinerary because she wants to see it, too.

Is there an english language web site with the birthday activities listed? Unfortunately I can't read the one in Thai. Will be in BKK (arriving midnight) November 8 to 14 and would love to see festivities.

Thanks, R. I hadn't maximized the screen, hence didn't see the "English" tab on the right side. I think we will just miss this display as we arrive at mid-night on the 9th. Oh well...

This probably sounds like a stupid questions, but does anyone know the particulars of the barge parade? Will we be able to see it from the ROS?? Is it something that occurs every night or how does this all work?? Having trouble finding more details on the website about this and the arts celebration on the 6th at the Thailand Cultural Center, which also sounds fantastic...

most likely it will be in the afternoon or morning---at nite you would not see anything as it gets dark about 6....why don't you write to or telephone the sheraton and ask them for the particulars....

WaterGirl,
I don't think the time has been set but I would think it will be in the afternoon to the early evening period. Also the procession will normally end at around the Naval Academy / Wat Arun area and that's quite far from the ROS. Best view will be from the stands set up along the bank of the river and I would start booking now.
They will have around 2 practice processions before the main event. The dress rehearsal will be your best bet as the you'll see the full procession with the crew in full costumes. Tickets will be easier to find as well.

rhkkmk~Thanks for posting this information. My husband and I will be in Bangkok November 5-7. From other posts, this sounds like a ticketed event? At this time, does anyone know where to purchase tickets?
Cheers!
