Bali or Kerala?
Starting to plan next year's big trip, considering either Bali or Kerala. Has anyone been to BOTH of these destinations? Which did you prefer and why? Pros and cons please. My attraction for Kerala is the houseboating tour

I've been to both and like them both very much. I think it depends on how long you have to be there, your stamina and whether you'll be planning independent travel or buying a package or otherwise have help.
Both places are inexpensive.
Travel in India tends to be more difficult than many other places.
Bali is easy in every way.
Yes, Kerala has houseboats and I loved the days I spent on the water.
In my experience the food is more reliable in Bali, I've never been sick there. I've gotten food-borne illness several times in India and worst of all in the south.
If you have little experience traveling in Asia I'd recommend Bali. Of the 2, if I were to be stranded in 1 of them I'd want it to be Bali. If you haven't been to Bali I suggest you go there first. If the houseboats are a must then, of course, Kerala although keep in mind it will likely be a small portion of your entire trip. If you can manage it do both.

Thanks MmePerdu. I have been to India three times, both North and South and also Kathmandu, but never to Bali. My inclination is for Bali, but I have a friend living in Bangalore who wants me to come over and visit. Time for a coin toss.

Tough choice. Under the circumstances it seems you should indeed do both. It's such a long way to go (assuming you're going from N. America or Europe) and so many opportunities for cheap travel between countries in the region on the low fare Asian airlines, you might seriously consider taking the time to visit both places.
