My relationship with Bali started when I was posted there to work in 2001 for a few months and eventhough I don't have any more work in Bali, I still make a point to go visit atleast once a year.
Alila Ubud and Tembok Bali are great places to go and just chill and let your brain go jello. VERY ISOLATED. No shopping, no running around to sightsee. Perfect for just relaxing.
What's the point of paying so much and not enjoy the property? I learnt from my past mistake of staying in the Chedi Phuket and only went to the beach twice out of my 5 days there. Too many nice friends that insists on taking you out...
No doubt that Tembok Bali is a hassle to get to (3.5 hours from airport) but you know you won't get side tracked into spending your holiday running around. I didn't buy anything when I was there for 3 days. NO SHOPPING! NO SIGHTSEEING! just massage, eat, read and sleep... but 3 days was too short, because basically we only had 1 full day to mellow out and then the next day we were out. I suggest atleast 4 days at Bali Tembok to make it worthwhile.
My tip 1): Do all your running about for the trip in the beginning, and then mellow out at a nice resort at the end, so when you head back home, you know you have rested well for atleast 2 days! That's what I'm planning for my sis and her family and friends (13 pax in total). No rest for me though cos I'm playing tour guide.
Tip 2) skip Jimbaran Bay for tourist-trap sea food at exhorbitant price and lousy food. few friends on separate occasions reported food poisoning and/or being ripped off.
Tip 3) Hire a driver and move about in Bali (it's sooo cheap anyway!). Don't attempt to self-drive unless you know the roads well, have very good sense of direction, speak passable indonesian, and cannot stand how balinese driver drives. Sometimes they drive me mad!
My top eating spots in Bali (in no particular order):
Naughty Nuri's for bbq pork ribs and potato crisps
Ibu Oka for babi guling (minus the sambal and blood sausages!)
Mutton Sate with mutton soup on Jl Raya Ubud
Breakfast at Murni's
Nasi Campur Ayam on the way to Peliatan
Made's Warung & Terazo for all kind of Indonesian Food
Bebek Bengil (Dirty Ducks) for crispy duck with sambal and its nice garden
Hard Rock when I am craving for a good burger or pastries
Mosaic and Kudeta for great fine dining food and experience and value for money
Have fun in Bali!
