Ayutthaya, anyone been?

I saw photos of this place and it said it's about 86 Km North of Bangkok. Has anyone been here? And, from BKK, how long would it take to get there? Is it a 1/2 day trip or a full day?

Do a search. Many, many people on this board have been, many more than once.

The preferred way to visit is a trip that goes by road one way and by river the other way. It's a full day trip.

I took the local train for just the day. I had a local guide to meet me and take me around for the day. He took me to meet the train back to Bangkok later in the day. One of my favorite day as he took me to an elephant preserve and home to meet his Mother and daughter.

If you like history you will like this tour. This is a routine tour offered through travel agencies in Bangkok. A couple sample prices are - 1000 baht for a day tour bus/bus and 1350 baht for a bus/boat tour. Travel agents act as brokers for the tour companies. You are picked up at your hotel and returned there at the end of the day.

It is very close, it is only one hour from Bangkok, it is history heritage (Old Capital City during Siam), they have many temples, very nice. I really love to spend many hours there and take the beautiful picture.

How's the elephant preserve there? Since we don't have time for Chiang Mai, I'd like to do a day trip to Bangkok and trying to decide between this one and Kachananburri. Thanks.

We had Thai friends who drove us to Ayutthaya for the day in their car. The enjoyed showing us the sites. Because we were not on a strict schedule (ie tour) we had time to have a dinner cruise on the river in the early evening. We had a 50' rice boat to ourselves (4 of us). Dinner was great! But I think the bus/boat combo tour would be my choice next time I go. Friends have done this one and said it was really nice.

That said ...your time in BKK seems to be so short, are you sure you want to leave the city on a day trip? Just asking... not meaning to be pushy... so forgive me if it sounds that way.
