Aung San Suu Kyi on Liberty and on Dissent
Anyone interested in Burma might want to listen to Aung San Suu Kyi talk on 'Liberty' and then on 'Dissent.' I have listened to the first one, which was recorded in secret and smuggled out, but surprisingly she was able to answer questions from the BBC audience live after the lecture.
From the BBC web site:
"The 2011 BBC Reith Lectures will be delivered by two speakers – Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and former Director-General of MI5, Baroness Manningham-Buller. They will be broadcast on Radio 4 and the BBC World Service in June and September, respectively. The lectures, entitled Securing Freedom, arise out of an extraordinary period of global convulsion. Aung San Suu Kyi’s lectures from Burma will focus on the struggle for democracy inside an authoritarian regime."

For some reason this is considered to be a political post, and has been removed from the Burma board. I don't know how many people in the Fodorite Lounge will find this interesting, as compared to the Burma Board, where I thought many people would, but here it is. Very interesting for anyone who cares to listen.

hOW INTERESTING TO SEE THIS. oUR BOOK CLUB meeting this Monday was Everything Is Broken, about the horrendous Cyclone Nargis that struck Burma in 2008, devestating the delta, and the corrupt military regime's non response. The author, Emma Larkin,(a pseudonym)is the god daughter of one of our club members.

I agree with offshore on this one. Thank you for the links. Burma is one part of SE Asia we haven't yet considered for these exact reasons. But I remain fascinated.
Shame the topic couldn't have stayed where those who travel in the area and have the most immediate interest would have been sure to see it. However, I believe the company here only sees value in the discussion of tourism itself. Unfortunately little about the nature of the countries themselves.
