We took plenty of $1US and about $500 US cash with us.We did not encounter ATM's on every corner and some places do not accept cards so we felt happy with the cash. Just take a good neckbelt or waist money belt. You have a chance of being robbed if you use ATM's late at night. Places like Hoi An & Hue did not appear to have ATM's. Do not miss Hoi An, it is a fabulous little town!

Two banks in VN with good ATM networks are ANZ and Vietcombank (the government-owned bank). As I'm preparing for a trip to Hanoi, I printed out a list of ANZ and Vietcombank ATMs in Hanoi. I'm sure the list is not exhaustive, but it has 3 locations in Hanoi for ANZ and 10 for Vietcombank ATMs. The original list had more ATMs in Saigon then in Hanoi. You might want to check websites for both of these banks. I've found the MC and Visa websites to be woefully out of date as far as ATMs are concerned.

spearhead, you can find ANZ ATM locations at
http://www.anz.com.au/vietnam/import...mlocations.asp
They have 6 locations in Hanoi, 9 in HCMC, plus Bien Hoa, Hue and Nha Trang. Nothing in Hoi An, though.
We had no trouble withdrawing cash at the ANZ's main HCMC and Hanoi branches, which are centrally located, and carried a mixture of dong and US$ (cash & TCs) for other cities.
