Art Museums in Kanazawa, Japan

We are here in Kanazawa and there is going to be quite a bit of rain during our 3-day stay. We are watching the weather very carefully to fit in the outdoor activities we want to do but would really appreciate some recommendations for museums, preferably art-oriented, for when the rain comes down (pretty drenching!). We did go to the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art for lunch (!!), which was lovely, but did not fancy any of the exhibits and what was on offer, prefer something slightly more conventional (although we have taken in manga and anime in Tokyo).

Just to give you a flavour of our tastes in art - we did go to the Tokyo National Museum and loved that with it's scrolls, screens, woodblock pictures. Also did take in a small Hokusai Museum in Tokyo, love that sort of thing too. Any suggestions - help?!

I can't say what you would think of them, but I enjoyed the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum for Traditional Products and Crafts,

I'd recommend a visit to the DT Suzuki Museum. We visited it in the rain, and I felt like the rain enhanced our visit. We also visited the castle and the gardens in the rain. The Kenrokuen Gardens are stunning, even in the rain. We also visited Nomura-Ke, the Samuri House, which we very much enjoyed.

Enjoy your time in Kanazawa - we would have enjoyed even more time there!

It's a bit further out of town but I'm sure you could take a bus or taxi (we had a hire car)...

Port Ono Karakuri Museum is well worth a visit. Firstly, the architecture itself is very striking, but also the exhibits, a mix of wooden puzzles and puzzle boxes, and lots of wooden mechanical puppets, many of which are historical.

I studied Japanese Early modern Literature and printing so...If like me you are a geek on woodblock texts, or print or such you MUST visit Kanda Jinbocho quarter in Tokyo, where antiquary book sellers line up like pizzeria in Italy!

Thank you to everyone for such wonderful ideas, much appreciated. kja, we did visit the Prefectural Museum of Art yesterday, some great stuff. We also had a lovely cake at Le Musee de H there. Kathie, yes, we've been doing a lot of things in the rain ever since we arrived in Tokyo just over a week ago because we arrived in a typhoon. Despite the rain, we're having a lovely time

I'm glad you enjoyed that museum -- I thought it might fit your interests.

And even in the rain, a visit to lovely Gyokusen-en, where you and your daughter can enjoy a real tea ceremony (under cover) might be worth considering.
