Just an FYI. I have to get visas often and driving into NYC for a visa is not fun. There is a company that will do it for you: CIBT

Great turnaround and service.

We're traveling to China in May with Ritz Tours. They say they will get visas for the two of us if we mail them $80. each. We must also send them our passports with the payment for the visas by early March. Passports will be sent back with our documents before the May trip. Is this a safe thing to do?

Just want to add here that I was at the PRC Consulate on 12th Avenue (West Side Highway) and 42nd Street
in New York to drop off my passport and application today. The process is supremely easy; I was in and out in less than 5 minutes.
Cost for single entry is, as mentioned, $50. To be paid in cash, credit card, or company check at time of pickup.

EK et al: Last time I had to have a Chinese visa 23 years ago, the tour company (PacDelight) took care of it...the cost was $20, all built into the tour price.
At $50...as noted, we got ours last week in L.A...proof that China as emerged as a very "capitalistic communist" country. (Karl M. is spinning uncontrollably in his grave).
Saw only small evidence of this in 1984..from what I hear, it's dominantly rampant throughout the giant nation today. See ya in Beijing or Shanghai.

Stu, I can't wait! Will be checking in here before the trip, of course!
The PRC has a huge building on the West Side highway and the visa aplication room reminded me of the Motor Vehicle Bureau, with flashing digital boards and all. Thankfully it took a lot less time!

EK...what hotels have you finally selected in Beijing and Shanghai and ...? We now have guides with cars in Beijing, Xian and Guilin and will wing it withut anyone in Shanghai except the Israeli kid who gives tour of the old ghetto and the restored synagogue for about five hours.
