I have visited many times over the years ( I stay in BKK ). Patong has many restaurants, Baan Rim Pa has a good reputation but I found it not much different from others. Patong is a very 'busy' place at night, many restaurants and bars, I think restaurants such as the Boathouse and New Siam and Red Onion at Kata/Karon tend to me better. Be a little 'wary' late night in Patong, it's a bit like Kuta if you've been to Bali.

I'd suggest Kata or Karon or Nai Harn beaches fare better than Patong which is very overcrowded and quite dirty. There are nice hotels at other beaches.Craig

Angela
I totally agree with Craig. Kata and Naiharn are more quiet and beautiful than Patong wich is crowded and noisy. We have spent 10 days in jan. 98 in Kata. Take also a day trip to Ko Phi Phi
Daniel

I was in Phuket last April. I highly recommend "Baa Rim Pa" which is just outside of Patong. It is set high on the hill and has a great view of the water. (We ate their twice. Try the Chicken in Padnus Leaf.)
It is Thai food and a little pricier than most places on the Island. Well worth it though! The Boathouse in Kuta is also very good.
The food in Thailand is very cheap by Western standards. Wine however, can be somewhat expensive, even for your basic bottle of red/white.

Agree with what others have said, kata and Karon, Nai Harn etc much much better than Patong, unless you want riotous night-life and noise etc. We used to visit Phuket from Singapore many times but nowadays we head to Hua Hin or Cha Am for a break, very sedate, clean and pleasant. Sadly Phuket has become a victim of it's own success, very get-rich-quick culture now.
