Bob, 5pm will be just about the end of the procession. It is scheduled to start around 3:30, so a little bit earlier than 5 might be better? I'll probably arrive earlier in the afternoon, for sure by 4pm. I need to find out for sure what time Maeng opens, but I think it is more like 2pm. She will be happy to cook for us!

i thought it started at 5, but now that i think about it that probably is way too late given when it gets dark in bkk...
so lets say we should be there any time after 3:30 providing maeng opens by then... let us know

As far as I know no bars are open before 5.00PM in compliance with the no liquor sales law. If you want drinks at the GTG then I think you should plan it after 5.00PM.
Also, if your main aim is to see the Royal Barge procession then you're supposed to be at the riverside by 2.00PM and the procession will take until the late afternoon to complete with bridges and nearby roads closed until the procession is over. IMO if you attend and you want to see the whole procession then you might want to time the GTG at a later hour.

hanuman, I think we've given up on the thought of seeing the procession 'live' (do you know of a good way to do it???) and that is why we plan to watch it on the big screen at Maeng's. I would still love to see it live, personally. I'm just doubting that it is 'easily' possible (with 'easily' being the KEY). I don't want to be in the sun in a crowd of people squished together, and then be ready to leave after watching it for maybe a half hour.
Suggestions?

Carol, having seen the procession "live" all I can say is that it's not as exciting as it looks! Hot, humid and you will need to dress up, suits and long dresses, if you are watching from any of the official viewing platform.
Here's a clip from one of the very few occasion that IMO was worth attending, note that this was a special occasion at night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbAkn8NaLWI

Hanuman...they will put the procession on TV won't they? Carol...do you think Maeng would let us have a "private" party or viewing at 3 or 3:30, and then evolve into a dinner at 5 pm when the bar opens, until when ever we get tired of each other? We all could see on the big screen and be cool and comfy.

Karen, I've just emailed Maeng (and Brad) to ask. I would, personally, not want to have a 'private' party, as Maeng's place is a new business and I want her to have all the business she can get. Things would no doubt be very quiet at 3-3:30 in the afternoon anyway. Chances are good we would be the only ones there. I've asked her about her opening hours, and if we could arrive that early. We'll see what she says. I am sure she will be more than happy to have us there.

If Maeng is open earlier in the day (I still don't know her hours for certain) then there is a chance that a pool player or two would be there. It would most likely be pretty quiet anyway. If she doesn't open until 5, I'll bet she would be happy to let us come in earlier on that day.

so, i thought i should bring this to the top again....Maeng's is a bit difficult to find i guess but it is roughly opposite the landmark hotel on sukhumvit on the 2nd floor.
we will be there from about 3:30 on to watch the boat parade and to have some drinks and a bite to eat...
ALL ARE WELCOME!!
