The quake,8.7, struck 308 miles southwest of the city of Banda Aceh in, on the northern tip of Indonesia's Sumatra island, at a depth of 20.5 miles.Tsunami warnings across the indian ocean. Its suppose to be a horizontal slip of the tectonic plate. So,hoping against hope that its not going to as bad as 2004 disaster.Tremors felt in India,Srilanka,Thailand and Bangaladesh too.

On the very day and the very moment in 2004,I was in Candolim beach in Goa,swimmming with my kids(it was 9am IST),completely oblivious, till I returned to the shack only to watch the disaster unfold on TV.Just to think I cancelled my booking in Mahabalipuram in Tamilnadu and opt for Goa.The resort was wiped clean by the tsunami.

Apparently it was two earthquakes of a different type to that which caused tsunamis in the region before. These were tearing of the tectonic plates ratther tahn one palte moving under another which caused the tsunami before. Apparently the warning has been partially lifted already (whatever that means!) and the possibility of a tsunami is slight - lets hope they are right..

Thanks for the concern. Despite being online and watching TV news yesterday afternoon, we knew nothing about the earthquakes until we read our emails this morning.

We actually were having dinner Wednesday evening at the time as the big aftershock at a Bali beach restaurant with an elevation of about 10 cms. So much for early warning systems! (Or maybe a case of ignorance is bliss.)
