Airline Luggage Restrictions

44 pounds for checked luggage and 11 pounds for carry on on intra China flights? Is that correct? Can you carry a purse in addition to your carry-on or does one piece mean one piece? Yikes - my travel books weigh more than 11 pounds!!

For internbational travel our experience with EVA has been 2 checked pieces of certain diemnsions and weighing 70 lbs each. One carry on - not counting a purse or small backpack- and as long as its not oversized they often don't get too picky about the weight- although I would keep it to 15-20 lbs on the carry on.

It is true that international baggage limits and inta-China limits are different. And yes, the limits you cite are typical. You can carry a purse plus your carry on. Some airlines are very strict about carry on weights, others are not.

oops - that posted before I wanted it to!

Bill, the baggage limits you cite are those for travel from the US to an international destination or from an international destination to the US. They do not apply to flights within an Asian country. Even flights between Europe and Asia have different (lower) baggage limits.

For domestic flights within China, it's 20kg per passenger for economy class. I believe the first class allowance is 10kg extra. Sometimes they enforce it.

There seems to be no rule regarding carry-on luggage or there is a rule but no one cares. I've never had my carry-on weighed. And since my rollaboard weighs 8 lbs empty, I'm sure it's always over 11 lbs. In addition, I carry a purse and sometimes another shopping bag.

Alcohol is not allowed in your carry-on even if it's sealed and unopened. I've been allowed to board with small leatherman/swiss army type pocket knives after a brief inspection.

If anybody cares i went from Burma to Bangkok to the US straight thru.I paid extra for the heavy luggage just for the first part and not on the much longer part. Thankfully. It cost an extra 120$ in Burma. I could only imagine what i would of paid in Bangkok.

cochin, if you were flying from Bangkok to the US, you probably wouldn't have incurred extra charges, as you would have the two pieces of luggage up to 70 pound rule rather than the 44 pounds per person rule.

I know that this is a stupid question, but does each person get 44 pounds. We are traveling with three people--2 adults and one child. The child's bag is a 19 inch bag and will never carry 44 pounds. I was wondering if we get 132 pounds total or that each bag has to be limited to 44 pounds?

if the weight limit is 44 pounds per person and you have 3 people then you have an allowance of 3 x 44 = 132 pounds but there may be restrictions on how big and how much any one bag can weigh.

So is 44 pounds limit to each bag no matter what the total is?

No, Killago. Most international airlines still have a maximum per piece luggage weight of 70lb. So, two people together can have one 70lb piece and a 18 piece, without having to pay extra.

The 70lb limit is "absolute" per piece. More, and you have to split it up or they won't take it regardless of how much you pay. With some exceptions like medical equipment...

I understand the rules for international flights. I am worried about domestic flights. I have read horror stories on Fodors of people having to redistribute their stuff between their luggage at the airport for these domestic flights. Does anyone know about this. Thanks for your help. Just trying to find a definitive answer before buying more lugggage.

Just got back from SEA. Flew Cathay throughout. Their allowance is 70 lbs. max. per person. However, if you had seen the "hand" luggage on the international flight back to Canada it was mind boggling. On the flight out they were weighing everyone's hand luggage - obviously not on the flight back from HongKong!

We will be traveling to China soon and have heard various stories concerning the size of the luggage you can carry on for domestic flights. I realize you're allowed one carry on bag plus, a person item but, would love to know exactly what size is allowed. My carry on bag is 22 x 14 x 9 which my travel agent feels is all right, especially since we're booked in business. However, I have read some reports that state the bag must be no larger than 20 x 13.78 x 10. I have checked some of the airlines websites and not been able to find the correct information. HELP!!
