skapadz-sorry to hijack you're thread-have a wonderful time and do what Tracy suggests. A pair of pants for formal occasions & the Palace etc and then good looking shorts everywhere else. You'll be okey dokey! Have a ball!
Spygirl-we have shopping here!!! We're not all desert, kangas, Ian Thorpe etc. etc. (giggle!)

Hi, Skapadz, I lived in Bangkok for a year and a half and must say my husband dressed in shorts and sandals to many places. Maybe not to a night club with a dress code or to Lord Jims at the Oriental buut generally very acceptable. Tank tops are ok but u will stand out as a farang a bit more because across Asia men tend not to bare their underarms much (e.g. in india still very unusual). I should confess I read kathie's and bob's answers and disagreed entirely but decided not to post earlier because I was wary of starting exactly the posting war which has started! I guess everyone does things their own way. Enjoy your holiday - apart from the day u go to the Grand Palace or bed Supperclub or Lord Jims dress however u feel comfy - that will prob be the last thing u really need to focus on in Bkk - they get so many tourists that almost anything goes.

rose colored glases
whats going on in here. Im usually the one that teases RHKNK and kathie.
you'll be serprised too here that I think wearing sandles is just grubby.. and I find it unsafe after all this is a urban jungle.
if ya go too khao san those of use wearing shoes are the freaks.
As I said many times. Way too many thais wear boxers as thier shorts so regular shorts are upscale atire.
If your clubing most places around silom 4 will let ya in with shorts and some decent shoe's but places like CM2 and Q bar wont. but you can rent some baggy pants from them for 300baht.
And as far as all thais in clubs wearing fab cloths.. PLEASE.. over a quarter of the girls in just about all the clubs are prostitutes and the labesl were fakes.. most clubs, even spasso and other ultra high end places have section where these girls mull around.
What I do is buy pants with zip off legs..
skapadz what clubs ya into i live here and can help ya out. it seems like your a young guy.

Just want to say that the Fodor message boards are, in my opinion, the best resource out there for real-time travel info. I also like the way people disagree respectfully. Lively discussions over things like proper attire are fine, as long as we don't flame or single out individuals for ridicule. If people didn't have differing opinions, there would be no responses to any posts! Let's not take ourselves too seroiusly...
