A week in August after Singapore
Greetings.
My wife has business in Singapore in mid-August, and we're contemplating a week in the region thereafter.
We're not city people, so Singapore doesn't feel worth the extra time.
Thailand (Ko Samui) and Bali come highly recommended, but is August an unbearably hot and humid time? Is security a legitimate concern?
Our best thus far have been on a dive boat on the Great Barrier Reef and a cottage on Hana Bay on Maui.
Recommendations (including waiting for another season) are appreciated.
thanks.

Definitely take another week and enjoy another part of Asia. Bali is certainly a possibility, and there are beach areas of Thailand worth considering as well as beaches in Malaysia. The nice thing about Bali is that you can both the beach and a cultural experience. Many beach resorts don't allow you much of a sample of the local culture/

its SE Asia so of course it is going to be hot and humid...august is prime season in bali so everything will be at top price, but the good thing is that top price is cheap in comparison to usa prices...
look at peace resort on koh samui...may be difficult to find something however...
there are island up and down each coast of malaysia too...langkawi is very nice...

Singapore and Indonesia are just about on the equator, so you get HOT 365/24. Humid is variable, and August happens to be one of the less humid months in Bali. August is the high season in Bali and top resorts are fairly full. If you decide to go there book now.
I live in Jakarta (I'm an American) and travel to Bali several times a year. Security is an issue worldwide, but I wouldn't say that this is a problem that is special to Bali at this time.
I would ditto the above comments that Bali is a superb combination of culture and nature. It's not the best option for diving however.
As a left field recommendation, please look into the Kungkungan Bay Resort which is in Northern Sulawesi (Indonesia). You can get there from Singapore by flying non-stop to Manado on Silkair. This is an upscale dive resort with some of the most profound marine life in the world. It's a really nice place, well run, comfortable, good food, and world class diving. Take a look at their website: www.kungkungan.com
