this is true most toilets you have to pay a token amount to use. As Kathie said most bathrooms in the touristy areas and other nice areas will be good. However, one thing I always do is carry a bit of tissue in my purse, becuase I have run into many places that don't have tissue. But remember, most of the toilets you use will say not to flush paper down them, so dispose of it into a waste basket. I think its becuase most Southeast Asian countries not treat the sewage the same way they do in the west. But I have only run into really bad toilets when I am off the beat and path.

You might want to take a look at Eva Newman's book "Going Abroad", a guide to using toilets all over the world!

Purell and packets of toilet tissue are highly recommended.

"off the beat and path".

I learned a new word recently that applies exactly to the above.

I think the poster means "off the beaten path".

And the new word was one applied to instances where a phrase only ever heard was written down.

Thing is - I've forgotten the new word - how frustrating - egg(something).

Anyone know?

just came back from an Intrepid Tour of Vietnam,Cambodia and Thailand and travelled alone. What a great company! The bathrooms are no big deal - and everyone above has said what I would have. I do have some questions about squatting techniques for the less flexible "large" westerner but I managed. When you are out at night and need a toilet, marching into the next Hotel you see is always good (try to look like you are staying there). There is almost always a toilet near the reception desk. But carry a small pack of kleenex just in case.

Having just returned from 28 days in The Orient (8 countries and 11 cities), I can say with great confidence that the 2 Western things that all Orientals will agree are the most significant contributions to their societies in the last 100 years.....are air conditioning.....and Western toilets.
