To Chimani,

Why do you think there are tens of thousands of women police officers hired by the government to cut down on the out of control problem of women getting assaulted on public transportation?

Yes, I have taken public transportation in India. I have seen people almost lose their lives getting pushed down into the train tracks as hordes of people pushed to board the trains, so it is not only a matter of getting sexually assualted. For a first time lux traveler with less than 15 days to be in India, why should she subject herself to public transportation when there is no need? With only 15 days, she doesn't have any time to waste or get lost.

The original poster's purpose is not to visit India to suffer. She clearly stated she is staying in luxury hotels. A driver and a guide in my opinion is the only way for most travelers to visit India on a short trip.

"I have seen people almost lose their lives getting pushed down into the train tracks as hordes of people pushed to board the trains" - when boarding 1AC or 2AC class coaches on long distance trains? Surely not. I agree that suburban commuter trains should be avoided, but there's no reason to avoid the long distance trains. In fact, 2AC is a great way to see India and meet Indians. And travel by train is likely safer than travel on Indian roads!

As a woman going to India, you have to be very careful. Funny how some of you women here are defending the disgusting behavior displayed towards Indian women born and raised in the U.S when they visit India. The men there refuse to leave you alone, there is nonstop oggling, groping, gawking, surrounding you, following you, grabbing, getting in front of you and surrounding you while gawking at you, harassing you everywhere including taubas, trains, buses, bus stands, stores, street. They refuse to leave you alone and yes we are covered from head to toe in the Indian garb. They know it is wrong because look at how they run when they see a relative making their way towards you. Funny how they think just because we are Indian woman born and raised in another country, that we must be sluts. I think the men who do this are male whores since they need any excuse to go after indian women born and raised in the U.S...perverts. I don't care if they think we are easy or this or that. Funny how women born and raised in India defend this behavior because it does not happen to them and because they think the truth will make their country look bad. How disgusting and selfish. The men their don't spare you and you are the only one fighting back or trying to get away while the others don't care. Be careful going there. Disgusting how most of you women defend this disgusting behavior because you either like it, it doesn't happen to you or because you are afraid admitting the truth will make your country look bad.

...and another first-time poster, apparently with an axe to grind, brings up a 3-year-old thread...
