~2 weeks in Thailand while pregnant?

I swore I would never ask one of these questions.... but here I am, asking. My H and I are getting to the point where we are thinking about starting a family. This is something very private to me and it stays between my H and me (and the entire Fodor's message boards, lol)

My mom and I are planning a 2 week trip to Thailand this fall. I'm 100% healthy and have no reason to think that that change. If we're going to do this trip, I need to book these tix asap. Sooo.... if something were to happen soon (fine- I get knocked up) that we would obviously cancel. but if it happened later (this summer or something) would there be any reason why I couldn't go to Thailand for 2 weeks assuming I spoke w/ my doc, and took all normal precautions?
I'm not one to put my life on hold for something I can't even predict...

Thanks for your input!

You are doing the right thing trying to plan for the possibility. Every pregnancy is different, so it is really impossible to know how you will feel or if there will be any difficulties. Most pregnancies are uneventful, but no guarantees.

In my case, I had morning sickness 24 hours a day. I was vomiting daily from week 6 to week 42 (when I had a c-section due to lateness, lack of amniotic fluid, and lack of contractions despite medication to induce labor).

Why tell you that? Because my pregnancy lacked all the warm fuzzy feelings I expected and was hard. I LOST 8 kilos while pregnant. BUT, I traveled to New York in week 12, and to Hong Kong in week 35 (both trips from Japan). I never felt great, but I could enjoy the travel anyway. And, we ended up with a fabulously healthy daughter, who is now 10, and she is a great traveler!

Thailand, I wouldn't hesitate to go, but that's me. Everyone is different. Of course, consult your doctor.

If you felt fine, there's no reason I can see to cancel the trip. Bangkok has teriffic medical facilities too.

i would buy trip insurance though. That way, if you are medically unable to travel, you'll get your money back on airfare or other non-refunable deposits. Small price to pay for peace of mind.

Happy family-making!

Well, our tickets are FF miles. So really, it's $100 to put the miles back in the "bank."
I guess my question is this- would YOU travel to Thailand preg? 3-6 months preg?
I know I cannot predict the future.... I have no idea if/when I will get "knocked up." But if it happens in the next 8 months, should I cancel this trip?

ps- we're US residents... but I consider myself quite travel savvy I don't sweat the small stuff. I know all over the world women get preg and do much more than travel around Thailand...

As others have said, if you feel ok and your doctor doesn't have some medical reason to recommend against it, by all means, go.

Do make sure you have appropriate travel vaccines far in advance (tetanus booster, Hep A, typhoid) as they typically don't like to vaccinate women when they are pregnant. You will want to observe food and water precautions more carefully than if you weren't pregnant.

Also, you will likely want to skip malarial risk areas, as malaria is considered a medical emergency in a pregnant woman. Fortunately, only the border areas of Thailand (Thai/Cambodia, Thai/Laos, Thai/Burma) are considered malarial risk.

I actually was fortunate enough to visit SE Asia in '02. I did not get any extra shots though I did take anti-malaria pills (I hated those buggers- made me feel so nauseous!)

Cr@p- should I look into extra shots? I HATE needles!!! :/

Most, if not all, travel insurance excludes pregnancy.

I travelled to Bali four months pregnant with my son and Australia 6 months pregnant with my daughter. Just got back from Thailand and it felt funny not to be pregnant for the long flight! Just make sure you drink plenty of water, take frequent walks around the plane and be careful of what you eat. We never had any problems at all and we ate plenty of street food!
