2 Day Trip Near Mumbai

Hi,

We have an extra 2 days on our trip to India before we fly out of Mumbai. Does anyone have any recommendations of an overnight trip we could do from Mumbai? We'll have spent plenty of time in Mumbai, so trying to find something that would be different and fun to do outside of the city.

Thanks,
jamie

If you had two nights rather than days I'd strongly recommend Aurangabad as a base for visiting the Ajanta and Ellora caves. With only one night you could look at going up to Pune. I haven't been, but it looks quite interesting. It was one of the British summer capitals and is now an IT center.

Consider going to Matheran, which is a car-free village up in the hills 2-3 hours drive (you can also take a train). You have to walk the last bit or you can go on horseback or by horse cart (the hotel will get your bags if you walk or go on horseback). It is a former British colonial hill station. There is lots of good walking and some really tremendous views. I would recco the Verandah in the Forest, go to http://www.neemranahotels.com/verandah/index.html.htmor http://www.neemranahotels.com/– but I stress that this has a lot of FADED colonial charm, but still interesting and you can see what it once was when it was a private home.

Pune is too far, IMO, for only 2 days even if you fly. It has some interesting bits, but really is not that interesting IMO.

I would support flying to Aurangabad, seeing one set of the Ajanta/Allora caves that afternoon, then seeing the other in the morning before flying that afternoon to Mumbai. Many people do that. For arrangemenys, mail [email protected] have a good trip

I would agree to what cicerone has mentioned above - will go to Matheran rather than anywhere else.

Pune is too far but really is not that interesting unless yu wish to visit Osho Ashram
