I think J62 sees it the same way as I do: as a question of going to Rome as a question of getting a nonstop instead of a connection.

I would not decide to:
1) go to Rome or
2) not go to Rome
to catch a flight home based on any concern about immigration or customs or security control. The only reason I would do it would be to get the nonstop vs a connection.

The immigration, customs, and security procedures are what they are unless they change. Just allow enough time. It all boils down to standing in line, moving forward, answering a few simple questions, and then you are on your way. That would not factor into which airport I would choose.

<<"Check and see if the Delta nonstop from Venice to Atlanta is running in May so then you would do customs there (which is wonderful as there are many agents and its fast) before you would connect up to Detroit"

Atlanta? Fast??? Compared to what?

Sorry, but it has lots of "booths" and it's fast for visitors to the US. If you are a citizen... I have seen lines that are legendary....>>

Are you talking about customs or immigration? Customs at
Atlanta is fast -- pick up your luggage and walk right through unless you have something to declare.

Immigration has lots of booths and usually, but not always, moves quickly.

And immigration and customs was faster than LAX and JFK every time I've gone through. Security was a pain, long line there and frazzled TSA agents.
