Upgrades simply don't exist for those who have not been in a position to arrange for them -- with eligibility -- ahead of time. Flights are full. The number of elite-status passengers with large inventories of miles has mushroomed. And the airlines are scrambling to hook those elite-passengers and their miles up with the upgrade seats (and where possible, charge them a little extra in miles and/or money).

Upgrades for out-of-your-own-pocket, non-elite travelers are a remnant dream from a bygone era. Not even worth the time to ask.

My advice? If you have the choice (and I never do), book a discount airline with larger seats like Jet Blue. Or an upstart airline trying to build a clientele like Independence.
