Hey Ellie,

I'm in the same boat as you! I bought travel insurance a month ago from Access America, but since I didn't buy it within 14 days of purchasing my ticket, they will not cover an airline default.

The insurance agent did tell me that my credit card company would help me since it would be a delinquent service if the airline didn't follow through with the entire flight.

I'm not sure...so I'm going to try to call Amex up and find out.

Hope this helps!

Amy

Thanks for the info Amy. Sorry to hear you too. I called credit card company yesterday and they said that they couldn't gaurentee anything at this point. I would have to file a claim after date of flight and then they would take file a legal claim. I'm going to check out travel insurance,
Hope the your insurance agent was correct about credit card company. There's slim chance we could fit in time frame of two weeks, wonder if that's standard. Could you post anything more you find out from Amex? Thanks, you helped.
Ellie

Hey folks, RELAX
Although I hate UA, they are not, I repeat, not, going under anytime soon, so just chill out.

United,

Thanks for trying to reassure us, but when you've invested $1000's into airline tickets & you're going to be in a foreign country, you do kinda want to be prepared for something like this. I don't want to have to spend $1000's more to try to get home.

Thanks though for your input. It is still appreciated!

Amy

I'm willing to insure anybody traveling on UA in the next 5 months. For $100.00 pp, I will guarantee a RT or OW, depending on what you need, in case UA goes under.

You will be VERY lucky to find an insurer that will cover United (at this point) against default.

The good news is that United is not likely to simply cease operations. They will continue to fly after declaring bankruptcy, as they work on reorganization.

If they do stop flying, you should be able to dispute it with your cc. They may not like it, just fight it to the bitter end!

Actually, AccessAmerica is still listing United as a covered carrier (assuming you meet the rest of their insurance purchase requirements.

I think most of the travel insurance companies publish who they cover and who they won't. Be careful when you read the lists -- some list who they cover (AccessAmerica lists the covered companies) while some of the others list who they DON'T cover.
