I've only used the Bose headphones and yes, they are worth every penny. What a difference than listening to white noise and screaming kids!

Just bought a pair of the Shure E500 PTH. Amazing! The Bose just don't even compare. Now if I can just find somebody to buy my Bose!

I went through this a few years ago.

Found this website very helpful. I bought the Solitude's based on thier reviews and have been very happy with them.

Another vote for Shure. I got the E3c for a good price a year ago (~$180), but their cheaper E2c (or similar models, under $100 ) should be just as good for blocking noise.

I use them everywhere, including all plane trips. They hardly ever leave my ears on plane trips.

Let me bump this up as there's an inquiry about NR Headphones.

Also, today I found that amazon.com has the Shure E2G noise-isolating (not noise cancelling) headphones for $61.65 shipped. That's the lowest price I've seen for any Shure headphones ever.

OK, here's my report on the new Sony MDR NC-22 earbud noise cancelling headphones:
1. Not in US yet, purchased on EBay from a Japanese merchant, paid about USD80 with shipping (delivered in 3 or 4 days)
2. Comes with 3 sizes of silicone earbud that can be interchanged. Powered by one AAA battery in a slim holder that also has a clip to attach to clothing, on/off slide with indicator LED and a button to temporarily override the NC such as when speaking with a flight attendant.
3. Worked pretty darn well. There was a little bit of the usual white noise hiss at first but not much and it quickly faded into the background. Good sound, both with NC on and when NC was turned off. The thrum of jet engines - even seated at an overwing exit - was not totally obliterated but sure as heck was significantly diminished. When turning off the NC, the ambient noise sounds amazingly harsh at first.
4. Incredibly easy to carry - comes with a little drawstring pouch.
Have used them on long (13.5 hours) and short (3.5 hours) flights and they are now part of my standard road warrior equipment.

In any case, noise cancelling really does work. Consider adding the IPOD Nano or similar device. Extremely small and packs at least 24 hours of music. I listen to books from Audible.com.

I purchased noice reduction earphones for my recent trip to Australia. I paid $30 for earphones by Colby at Circuit City. I was rather happy with them until I walked into Big Lot's for the first time yesterday. They were $15.99 there.

Look for the type of aircraft first.

We had just flown with an Airbus A340-300 from Frankfurt to Atlanta and back and it was incredibly silent within the cabin. You could hardly hear the engines. You could talk without raising your voice, and we slept like babies without headphones or any other gadgets. B747, B767 and the smaller Airbus aircrafts are much louder.

It's not just engine noises a good set of headphones can block. In fact, it's MOST IMPORTANT to block out crying babies, chatty Chinese, etc...

And don't forget those flight attendants on the microphone at 2:00 in the morning saying, "The captain has turned on the fasten seat belt sign." or "There are too many people trying to use the toilet in the back of the airplane," or "We want to remind you that drinking alcohol not served to you by a flight attendant is illegal," or "Duty Free Items?"

Sorry, OT, but wally, you have me paying more attention to the inflight announcements recently. You'd have liked this one...

Our flight from Chicago to Jacksonville before the holidays was delayed by about four hours due to weather, finally taking off around 10:30pm and due into JAX at about 1:40am. At 1am, about 40 minutes outside of JAX, the first officer woke everyone up to give us an extended description of the weather conditions in Jacksonville (nothing notable), and then he repeated the entire thing again...in French!

Wally, picking up on ms_go's post, you'd love to fly on Air Canada. All in-flight announcements are in English and French. Free drinks in steerage, though, when travelling to Europe, Asia, or South America.

Anselm--the interesting about my flight was that it wasn't on Air Canada, it was on a United Express regional carrier (and one that I'm pretty sure does not serve Canada at all). Not sure I've ever encountered this on any US carrier-operated domestic flight.

I guess I need to fly Air Canada. I've been checking prices and I haven't found a good one yet. I would like to get up to Montreal or Toronto one of these days, but I don't do cold weather very well, being in Florida. Also, I don't do miles with United/U.S. Air, which is their partner.

Two weeks ago on British Airways, they only announced during the first 30 minutes and last 20 minutes of the flight that the fasten seat belt sign was on. There was a lot of turbulence and the sign was going on and off every 10 minutes, but they never mentioned it during the night flight on the intercom. This made for better sleeping.

I was talking to a pilot just two days ago for a major U.S. airline and he told me he leaves the fasten seatbelt sign on because it makes the flight attendants job easier. Just think, now we can have 300 pound flight attendants! I won't name the airline, but they made the NBC news last night.

Another vote for the Etymotic ER4-P. The range of sound is just incredible. Also makes it really easy to sleep on those long flights to/from Beijing.

Better than the Bose and I believe a much clearer sound than the noise canceling headphones that I have tried.

Also very small and light - another plus for the traveller!

I thought the ER4-P's stuck out to much from my ears to allow sleeping with my head turned, so I gave them to my girlfriend. I bought the Shure E500's which fit closer to my ears, plus they sound better than the ER4's. The PTH feature comes in pretty handy on flights as well.
