More Leg Room in Coach? (American Airlines)

I am traveling to Hawaii in September and can not afford to go 1st class. Therefore we chose American because of the "more room in coach". Have I made the right choice? Does American really have more room in coach? Thank you in advance for any opinions.

I ended up flying on American this past January to Chicago and was surprised that there really was more room in coach. However, I was only on a 2 hour flight. Maybe someone out there who's done a longer haul in coach could give you more insight.

Yes! I did not think that the promised extra 2 inches would make much of a difference. Maybe it was all in my head, but it really seemed to help. One flight was on a smaller plane (sorry, don't know specifically what type), it made the journey to England tolerable. The return trip was on a 777 and that seemed downright spacious. Of course, I mean spacious for coach! Based on our experiences, I would make it a point to fly AA when possible.

Yes, definitely. I flew American to Kauai in December and there was definitely more leg room than in past American flights. This is really not a bad flight as some would have you believe. I stay up all night the night before the flight and then sleep on the plane. Then when we get to Hawaii which is usually early afternoon, I am rearing to go. Have a great trip!!

Yes, there is more room. I took my family to Maui in May. I live in southern California and go to Hawaii often (I had a client in Hawaii and went about twice a month for a week at a time)- but always in first class, because I have so many frequent flier miles. I couldn't upgrade my entire family on our May trip, so we all sat in coach and I was amazed at how comfortable it was! In fact, next time I go, I don't think that I'll bother to upgrade - coach was really very comfortable, and the food on any airline is yucky anyway.

American has made their coach cabins much more comfortable. I had to take a last-minute trip to Dallas recently and was surprised by the extra room, especially compared to the sitting-in-a-phone-booth-like conditions on USAirways, Delta, etc. I am now planning a cross-country flight and am booking American, even though it means a short hop on a prop plane! The extra leg room is worth it.

Booked trip to Alaska on AA because of legroom on redeye flight return. I could definitely tell a difference in the space. My 6-foot husband said it still didn't give him enough room to get his legs comfortable for the night segment. So better, but not the comfort of business. (Unfortunately not everything else on the return was smooth. They adjusted their flight schedule and cancelled our connecting flight so rescheduled on next flight 1.5 hrs later, increasing our layover after redeye flight to 3 hrs. They only had 2 people at their ANC counter and no skycaps so we waited 1 hour to check-in. Then when we got to DFW for our layover the connecting plane was late arriving so it became a 4-hr layover.)

Yes, it is true. There is more room. However, American seems to be pulling out of many markets so we'll see how long this lasts. My guess is that it is history

I just purchased a NY/London/NY ticket on American for much the same reason--more legroom. I'm usually not an Economy flyer, but the price was amazing, so I thought it was worth a try. I WISH I had checked the Interior Specifications first. Seems standard pitch in Economy on an American 777 is 32-35" (I couldn't get anyone at American to tell me which seats are 32 and which are 35) vs. 31" on Continental where they are not promoting more legroom. Can one inch make that much difference? Are some seats better than others? Please let me know. I'm afraid I've made a terrible mistake. Thanks, Nancy-
