June 2008 - flights and tight time schedule - when to book
Dtrs HS graduation and son's college grad. are 36 hours apart and 1000 miles apart. Savannah on a Saturday AM and Boston on a Monday afternoon. I know June 2008 is a long way off. For event such as this, we are obviously not shopping low fares but schedule - which will undoubtedly change 6 times before then.
Do we book flights now that have tolerable schedules or wait so when schedules change we can make more informed decisions based on what is what then. Airlines are Delta or USAirways (also Air Tran, but will not fly them for this - too many bad past experiences).

The good news is that you have Sunday to make your travels. If I were you, I would pick an early flight on Sunday morning with an airline that has at least 4-5 more flights that day, even if it involves a connection. In case the first flight gets cancelled for whatever reason you still have few more possibilities.
If money is no object, buy the cheapest fully refundable tickets. In case something really bad happens with your airline, you can get your money back and make arrangments with another airline.
Good luck,
and btw, Congrats!!!

Delta has at least 10 flights a day (including Sunday) SAV-ATL, starting at 6am. Then it has approx 10 flights a day ATL-BOS.
I'll bet a hundred dollars you can make it from SAV to BOS on DL on that Sunday, if you book a morning flight out of SAV.

I knew one or both of you would respond - as Fodor's resident airline experts.
I might go the fully refundable route - partly because although graduation times are fixed, something may occur that alters travel plans for one of us - like there is a pre-graduation thing at son's college (art school - exhibition type thing) such that one of us will want to go early for that. And then we could also buy ticket for our dtr as we have not decided if she will make the trip with us (already whining about missing likely graduation parties on Sat nite)

We've flown the Delta (Comair) SAV-BOS non-stop on a Sunday twice (both times in March). There's no traffic to the Savannah airport on Sunday (20 minutes) and the airport is small and efficient (very short walk to gates). We got there 2 hours ahead on both occasions, and had 1 hour and 45 minutes to spare. (But, you probably know all that if you live there.) It's a small plane, so I booked well ahead.
Sunday is also the best day to arrive at Logan, especially if you plan rent a car drive anywhere.
Now is not to soon to reserve accomodations in Boston, especially for economical rates.

djkbooks - thanks, but I guess I was not clear - you have it reversed. We live in Boston, son's college is in Savannah.
I love the Savannah airport. I will check schedule of one DL non-stop/day and probably book that.
