How far do airline partnerships go?

We had to cancel a flight with Delta and have a credit for a year. Continental has a flight we would like at about $100 less than Delta's typical fare. Do the airlines share monetary credits or is it just frequent flier miles?
Thanks in advance.

If the lower fare has to be purchased from Continental, then no, you can't use your Delta credit.

Thanks, Patty. I was afraid of that, but thought I'd ask before giving up.

Depends on the terms of the ticket and your credit - it may well be that the restrictions limit the credit to only flights operated by (as opposed to codeshare flights, which carry a Dela flight # but are operated by another carrier). On the other hand, if this is not the case, Delta can sell you a ticket on CO so it is worth a call to ask.

Thank you, Seamus - I'll call Delta and find out. The worst they can do is tell me, No.
