Frequent Flyer miles on United

Does anyone have a hint on what will happen to the UA FF miles if they go tits up? Would we be able to still use them on partner airlines? I can't seem to get an answer anywhere.

I haven't heard that expression in years. Our friends across the border from Washington State in British Columbia used to say "Tits up in the toolies with the lights out," meaning "drunk." S140, are you from BC?

This question has been asked and answers speculated about several times here regarding several in -jeopardy airlines. I think you can't get an answer because there is no real answer - just good (and not so good) guesses. The airline does not want to talk with you about going out of business, because they say they will emerge from bankruptcy intact.

My best guess is that if United (USAir, AA or whoever) merges with someone else, the miles would transfer. But it is just as possible that an airline would get carved up - selling planes, gates, routes to several other carriers. In that case, I would guess your miles would be less secure.

But, as I said, that is only a guess and no one really knows.
