Flight from NYC to Melbourne, AUS
Hi folks,
I have to travel from NYC to Melbourne for business in Feb. My flight options are on United (from Newark via LA) or on Emirates (from JFK via Dubai). I will be traveling business class. Any thoughts on which I should choose? The cost is similar, so not an issue. Also, I get miles on Continental either way.
Thanks.

You won't get Onepass miles by flying UA. And I don't think UA flies EWR-LAX. Is that itinerary a mixed CO/UA ones?
And no Continental EQM on those EK flights either. Only spendable miles, not EQM. Same thing with Qantas.
If you need the CO EQM, you need to fly Korean Air, Air France, KLM, etc - but those usually require an extra connection in Sydney.
EK has a 3:20 connection at DXB, which isn't too bad.

check www.amadeus.net and select your travel date and UA as preferred airline, then do it again with CO, then with EK, then with no airline selected and compare all results !!!!
I did it NYC-MEL for example by selecting travel date february 15th !!
You will be surprised to see that flight UA839 flies JFK-LAX-SYD-MEL within the same flight number !! You have an aircraft change in LAX, from B757 into B747 but then still on UA839 LAX-SYD-MEL !!
Total travel time 25 hrs 50 minutes
I would do that with no doubts !!
EK takes 29hrs 20 minutes JFK-DXB-MEL and I agree they have a better service, but much longer trip !
the shortest is Qantas/AA JFK-LAX-MEL 22 hrs 30 minutes and the LAX-MEL flight is no-stop
Your option with CO is only for the flight EWR-LAX but then you board the same QF/AA flight LAX-MEL as above

What about Singapore Airlines ? Non stop NYC ( sorry don't know if it's JFK or EWR ) to Singapore and then it's about 6 hrs 45 into Melbourne. You can pick up Star Alliance Mileage using that flight.
