I did last year but didn't have many flights to choose from. May depend on where you are going.

I've gotten FF tickets in as little as a few days in advance and sometimes not been able to get ones 330 days out.

As the previous poster pointed out it all depends on the airline, where and when you want to fly, how many seats you need and how many miles you are willing to spend. There's no set answer.

From Milwaukee to Dayton or from Los Angeles to Sydney? Coach, business or first? Makes a difference.

I've redeemed awards anywhere from a couple of days to 331 days out.

Back in Feb, I was able to get one economy FF ticket from Boston to Spain just 9 days prior to departure. There was availability for another ticket but I was going alone.

I'm sure there are plenty of people out there managed to get 2 FF tickets less than 4 months out.

But if you're asking if it's possible for YOU, it depends on which airline you're flying, where you're flying to/from, is it economy or business or first class.

Most US airlines' FF programmes allow one to get FF tickets on any flights as long as there are unsold seats - the caveat being you pay double the normal amt of miles. In AA it's called AAnytime miles; so instead of 25k for a domestic r/t, you pay 50K.

Yes - I do this routinely with AA. The trick is you need to be very flexible. Flying a well serviced route definitely helps.

I am trying for Business Class on Air France either out of SEA or LAX.
Seattle has one flight a day and Los Angeles has 3. I would like a Skysaver award through Delta. Ha Ha

I'd say your chances are somewhere between slim and none. Business class is a revenue generating cow for most airlines so if there is any chance they'll sell the seat it is unlikely they'll give it away for ff miles.

Like others said, you need to be flexible.

For SEA-CDG, I found Skysaver roundtrip in business for 100K Skymiles, for example, 10/14-10/21, via MSP, all on NW.

But if you want to fly on one particular date, only on particular flight or flights, then yeah, good luck.

The AF LAX-LHR route has a few dates with 2 Skysaver business class seats available in October. You can try building your itinerary around that.

rkkwan,
On what site did you find SEA-MSP-CDG?

NW SEA-AMS has a sprinkling of availability here and there too but it will cost you an extra 10,000 miles.

No, I don't see it anymore. But say 10/13 outbound, I see Skysaver on NW via AMS. Return 10/21, also via AMS.

OK, just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. BTW I only see NW34 in coach on 10/13 but it's available on 10/15 in business.

Last September I redeemed a coach ticket about 3 hours before the flight, LAX-MIA-TPA, while sitting at the LAX Hilton bar. Used 25K miles and I believe $5 fee. Couple of hours later, I took the hotel shuttle, checked in and I was home next morning. The ticket was ~$500. I thought the award was a good value, even if I don't use the return.

I always do my AA OneWorld first or business class award tickets about 3-4 months out. Never really had a problem. One day adjustment here or there but that's about it.

I just booked an award for a friend today for travel in July and August - JFK-HEL-PRG//SOF-BUD-DME//SVO-HEL-JFK in business class (90K miles with an AA Oneworld award) and had my choice of dates all over the map.
