I presume that I will be allowed to carry my epinepherine "pen" really a portable syringe for severe allergies in my carry-on.I want to try to anticipate if this will be a problem. I could put it in my checked bag on my long flight to Africa,but I would rather carry on.

All prescription meds are allowed. If it doesn't fit in your zip loc bag, separately declare it to the tsa people.

I've flown with my epi-pen many times since 9/11. I wouldn't want to check it--what if I needed it? I never have, but I still keep it close.

I've only been asked about it twice. One time, the TSA person said, "What is that?" "An epi-pen", I replied. "Oh, a marker."

The other time, the TSA person was very reluctant to let me take it on the place, even when the armed military person working with her told her what it was, and that the airlines let people carry them on all the time. Since then, I've kept a note from my doctor with the epi-pen, just in case.

I always bring a copy of the prescription just in case TSA gets wiggy, just as my diabetic brother brings ones for his needles.

Make sure the prescription label is still on and legible.

Our son was detained at security in the UK because his was illegible and could have been drug paraphernalia. This was long before 9/11.

We made the plane, but not by much. The letter is a good idea.
