Delta- luggage/weight restrictions ?
My dear mom is driving me insane and I have got to find an answer for her. We are traveling from SAT to ORF (via atl) next week. We bought our tix in January using FF miles. We are flying coach out and 1st class home. She is Medallion status, the rest of us are not.
What are the luggage and weight restrictions? (We have called 3 times and gotten 3 different answers.)
Can her bags be heavier (over 50 lbs) since she is Medallion? Does it make a difference at all that we are flying 1st class back but not on the way out?
We will be taking 3 sets of golf clubs if that makes a difference at all.
Thanks! She is wanting to go to the airport and get a ticket agent to _sign off_ on the "rules." I wish I was kidding...

I think it is pretty clear on Delta website.
Regular coach travlers get one bag, not to exceed 50 pounds as checked luggage. There are also restrictions as to total size (determined by adding 3 linear measurements) and they are also specific as to what is required when flying with golf clubs - mainly liability waiver unless in hard shell case.
It is also specific that golf clubs count as a piece of checked luggage - so regular coach pazssengers traveling with suitcase and golf clubs would pay the $25 extra bag fee.
Now as far as her FF status - website also discusses that if one is gold or platinum medallion status the $25 fee second bag fee is waived for that person.
Baggage allowances are per ticket, not travelling party - so her status does not give you extra bags. And it makes no difference if ticket is with FF miles or purchased.
So for your traveling party. I am going to assume there are 3 people traveling, since you are bringing 3 sets of golf clubs - although you only mention 2 people.
You, going on a coach ticket, get one 50 pound checked bag. Golf clubs will cost $25. Same for the second regular traveler. Your mother - if gold or platinum medallion - gets 2 bags, each 50 pounds or less, for free.
Going home, flying first class, 2 bags for each are free.
If there are only 2 travelers and 2 suitcases and 3 golf clubs, I have no idea - since website only lists fee for second bag and does not mention 3rd bag.
Nor does website mention any special consideration for Medallion or class of travel or over-weight luggage.
Now, once you figure this all out, it will likely change.

Medallions and those traveling in first/business are allowed to check 3 bags up to 70 lbs each at no extra charge.

<i>Business Elite® and First Class passengers are allowed 3 checked bags at no charge up to 70 lbs.</i>
http://www.delta.com/help/faqs/bagga....jsp#medallion
<i>Yes, our PMs, GMs, FOs, EPs and those passengers traveling in First/Business Class cabin will still be allowed to check up to three bags at no additional charge on Delta and Delta Connection-operated flights only.</i>
The Medallion allowance is also up to 70 lbs per bag. Although it doesn't specifically state this on the website, I've never had an issue.

Thanks... I've gone to the website numerous times.
The confusion comes (at least when we call customer service) since we are flying HOME 1st class. One cs agent said that did not make a difference on our outbound flight (luggage.) The other said since we were flying 1st class home, we got the same "luggage rules" flying out, even though we are not 1stC.
I tend to lean toward what the 1st agent said- if we're flying coach out, the "coach rules" apply.
And there are 5 of us traveling...

Since you've received so many different answers, I'd suggest that you print out the information on the links Patty provided and bring it with you to the airport. That way you have Delta's own response in writing when the gate agent tells you that you have to pay for your extra luggage.
