It matters a LOT if you are flying long distances. All seats are not created equal.

You can't get advance seat assignments on BA to Europe (unless you pay extra) because BA doesn't offer them to economy-class passengers for free. AA does. This is about airline policies, not where you live. And if it matters to you, the vast majority airlines allow economy-class passengers to select seats if they pay an extra fee. A few don't.

I find it very annoying that you can't reserve seats. What's the reason?

1) you bought a codeshare flight, and the reservations system can't accommodate that; you should always avoid codeshares whenever possible. They are often bad news for travelers. 2) You are unwilling to pay (you must pay a fee on Lufthansa to get pre-flight seat assignments if you are in economy class), but I've read widely that even payments can't get advance seat assignments on a codeshare.

The reason I believe is because non US airlines started charging for early seat assignments. This has not always been the case. Here is Lufthansa's press release http://www.lufthansagroup.com/en/pre...icle/2912.html. What does not make sense is if you reserve on a codeshare you aren't even give the option to pay for an advanced seat assignment. I think if you book directly on that airline you get the option. I am not sure as I don't buy my airfare from non US airlines. I only recently had a problem with advanced seat assignments and found the press release above.

we have flown Lufthansa to Europe from USA booking thru United and had our seat assigned at the time of booking but that was a few years ago and we flew on our mileage. Maybe it is different when you use miles....tsk tsk...Just another way to get more money from you....

With BA you can only pre-book your seat if you pay, once check in opens (24 hours before the flight) you can then check in online and reserve your seat....

Last summer my wife and I flew United, London (Heathrow) to Philadelpjhia to Richmond, Va, and returned Lynchburg.Charlotte. London. My travel agent (which was cheaper than 'on-line'), had seats allocated for all flights at time of booking.

I have a flights in Europe booked through UA for May. I used UA miles. Flights are on SAS and LH. I was able to get a seating assignment on my LH flight but not my SAS flight. I will be on a cruise and have a sea day 24 hours prior to the SAS flight. I will have to pay up the yazoo to get internet service to check in 24 hours prior. Gads, the problems travels have now days!

went to Europe with Untied in September 2014. Used miles and had Business going but Economy returning to U.S. Had our assigned seats when we booked the flight but we did pay extra for the Exit row. Still it was assigned at time of booking.

I started a thread several months ago about this exact same issue--booking a Lufthansa codeshare on the United website. We just got back from our trip. 23 hours before the trip the Lufthansa seat assignment seat availability chart opened up. Many seats were already booked, but we managed to get seats that at least weren't in the middle of the middle section. No option beforehand to buy anything like United's Economy Plus though. Once they boarded they did announce that there were upgraded seats available for about 300 euros for each segment.

I prefer to get seat assignments at the time of booking, and this added an extra level of hassle at the end of the trip that I could have done without.

After our trip home (big United problems on both the outbound and inbound segments), we've decided no more United for us because they are so overbooked that if the slightest mishap occurs the passengers are screwed because there are no seats to accommodate them.

In September 2014 I booked flights through United's website, LAX-Madrid, Lisbon-LAX. Flew Lufthansa to Madrid and United back to LAX. I had no problem reserving my United seats at the time of booking (a restricted economy ticket). Had to call Lufthansa for their reservation number and the agent gave me seat assignments for my flights to Madrid; even got to select the seat I wanted.

You were lucky. When I tried to do this in Jan. 2015 and called Lufthansa, they told me that no seat reservations were possible in advance. I could get them at the airport or online 23 hours prior to the flight.

This just gets worse and worse, and I am now completely done with United. I just got off the phone with United because I was wondering where my 9,000 miles were for a recent flight on a United/Lufthansa codeshare.

I was told that I won't get any miles because Lufthansa does not award miles in K class (the seat I bought). According to their agent I was supposed to know this despite the fact that my printed United itinerary tells me 9300 total miles; they will only give me 300 miles for the miles flown domestically on this itinerary. They claim that a little vague * statement on page 3 of a booking gets them off the hook on this one.

Do not use United!

As far as I am concerned this is deceptive marketing by United!

I booked through United Boston to Italy using miles for one ticket and cash for another. The routing was Lufthansa to Italy, Swiss back. I was able to use the Lufthansa locator number to book the seats for both tickets on their website (this is different than the United locator, and it's listed at the top of your itinerary on the United website), but only able to book my seat on Swiss since I'm a United FF member and the cash ticket was not. I did however, get United customer service to put a note on the seat next to mine on Swiss that it was for my sister, and when I logged in 24 hours before to pick her seat, she was already in that seat.

The fact that Lufthansa isn't giving miles for that segment is Lufthansa's problem, not United's. The same thing happened to me with an entire Aer Lingus roundtrip. Just because they are code share partners, don't assume the flights accrue the same.

I will try again. A few months ago I went on the Lufthansa website with the booking number and still was not allowed to set up seat reservations.

You will not be able to do it until 23 hours prior to the departure. This is the voice of very recent experience speaking.
