Boeing 787 1st flight today

After 2 year delay Boeing is planning 1st 787 flight today. Yesterday they did high speed ground runs, including nose gear up.

Wondering if rk or anybody else is in Seattle today.

Now I know this plane isn't made out of plastic. They have another word for this--don't they?

The KIRO feed is delayed a bit, compared to BBC.

It's waiting at the end of the runway now.

When this plane was at the big air show in Oshkosh 2 summers ago, with thousands of other planes, it could be seen from everywhere on the fairgrounds...I was just amazed at it's enormous size!

FACS - I think you're thinking about something else. This is the very first flight of the 787, and I don't think Boeing has shipped it anywhere.

They are cutting the flight short due to weather. Should land in a few minutes. KIRO-TV has it live again.

Interesting - I didn't know they'd max out at 13,000 ft. Hope this plane has a good, long history.

Also didn't go over 250MPH. Less than half normal cruising speed.

The weather is atrocious here today, so I'm not surprised they cut the flight short. We watched for the plane out our office windows in Seattle (we are on the 20th floor and face north, with an unobstructed view) but we never saw it.

Here's a YouTube video of the take-off and first part of the flight:

We saw this plane on the asembly line two years ago. It's great to see it finally fly!

Did you see the video of the seating inside the plane. It looked like it was 3x2x3. Why not make it 2x4x2. In the back of the plane it looked like it was 3x3x3.

They used the 3-2-3 configuration because it is unusual and therefore more eye catching and interesting. That's just for the mockup display of course as each airline can use whatever seating configuration they wish.

I enjoyed reading about this new plane finally getting off the ground. Glad to see that my airline of choice (UA) has ordered 25 of them. I hope to experience the ride sometime in the not-too-distant future.

Yeah, Boeing!! (I don't really like Airbus.. sorry.. but everyone has his/her own personal choices)

The argument between 2-4-2 and 3-2-3 is mute as most airlines have indicated they will put 3-3-3 in coach on the 787.
