After flying NRT-LAX,should we

continue on east to MEM or overnight at LAX? Mom is 71,and in the past coming back from Europe we have stopped at ORD or BOS before continueing.

I'm usually very ready to get home, and would rather just push on than take the time to get luggage, go to a hotel check-in, unpack (even a little) and have to reverse the process the next day to wait in airport lines to get home.

Your flight from NRT to LAX would be about nine and a half hours. Making a connection and flying back to the east coast would add about 7 hours to the trip.

You certainly can stopover in LA, it would be easy enough to do. There are several hotels very close to LAX with shuttle buses. "Freezing rain" is an occaisonal feature at ORD and BOS that you won't experience at LAX.

I agree with Abram - keep on moving.

The LAX/NRT flight is more like 10-1/2 to 11-hr and you should be able to get some sleep on this leg of trip. And if it took 7-hrs to get from LAX to MEM, you'd be over the Atlantic Ocean - it's about 4-1/2 hrs. If your layover in LAX is a short one you should be back in MEM for late dinner or time for bed. I'd prefer to sleep in my own bed after this long journey.

Ok, so 9.5 to 10 hours for NRT to LAX (longer going the other way) and 3.5 hours LAX to MEM and 1.5 to 2 hours layover at LAX comes to a 15 hour trip. Your time may vary, e.g. I checked SideStep for the route and the one via LAX had a 3 hr 50 min layover.

The flight from NRT to LAX is about the same as flying from CDG to ORD. The second leg is a bit longer, but not much.

I'd probably just head home, but if it is a free stopover and I could get a nonstop from LAX to MEM the next day (or later) and I had the time then I might stop over.

It's really a question for your Mom and maybe her doctor.

I would say it depends how long you have to wait for your connection between flights. If you have to wait in the airport 2-3 hours you may as well chek into a hotel that is near the airport and has a shuttle. We do that when going from the east coast to Africa. We stop in Paris or London then we continue to Africa. Much easier and after such a long flight I dream of taking a relaxing bath or at least a nice shower and I am only 54 not 71

Layover at LAX will be about 3hrs....I like LA and a layover-overnight is tempting, but I just remembered that most hotels will not let you check-in until about 11A-12N...I think we continue on to MEM.
