Victoria Falls lodging dilemma

Hi all. I'm hopng someone can help with a lodging dilemma I'm having in Vic falls. This will be our first stop on a south africa vacation this august (wife and I + 2 teenage kids). We're pretty much committed to staying on the Zambia side because of the situation in Zimbabwe.

Can anyone suggest a good place to stay?? Zambezi Sun looks a bit commercial for us and the Royal Livingstone is out of our budget (have to pay for 2 rooms because of the kids). Tongabezi is booked (and also a bit pricey for us).

I want to start our trip out on a good note, but I've already spent a small fortune on the safari portion of the trip.....

Have you priced the River Club? Think it's cheaper than the Royal Livingston, but possibly more than the Zambezi Sun (which is very Vegas-y).

In August 2008, when visiting the falls, we will be staying at Stanley Safari Lodge in Livingstone, Zambia - it seems that people either love or hate this place (see reviews on Trip Advisor). As we are both biologists, we think we'll love it (the complaints seem to centre around the bats and bugs!!) Have a look at www.stanleysafaris.com. Not cheap though - we are getting a deal because the people we are renting our 4x4 from booked it for us. Robin

Stanley Safari Lodge is quite a ways from the falls...3km birdsview, but as a person, you have to go down the hill by car to get to it. The room was nice, but management wasn't and again, too far from the falls to enjoy it. I wouldn't recommend it unless like Robin, you have your own car.

I would suggest Zambezi Sun. It is commercial, it doesn't really fit, but frankly you won't (or at least shouldn't) be spending that much time at the hotel itself, and because so many people stay there and it has its own adventure center, its by far the easiest place to stay. It's also the closest to the falls.

Thanks for all the input. I did look at the River Club, but I'm trying to "ease" my kids into the Africa experience and all their rooms are open front...I was a bit concerned that might be a bit much for our first night in Africa.

It is worth considering that we won't be at the lodge/hotel very much, so maybe location of the Zambezi Sun is worth another look.

It's interesting that there were SO many wonderful safari lodge options to choose from and yet the options seem a bit limited on the Zambia side of the falls.

nyama - have you stayed at the Waterberry Lodge? Their website looks nice, but I can't find any reviews on them...
