Luggage weight restriction for flights within Kenya

I will be traveling on small planes between Naisobi and Samburu in Kenya, and was told that the flight limits each person to a 10kg (22 pounds) baggage limit. Does anyone know if they usually charge excess luggage fee? If they do I can simply pay a fee and not worry about the luggage. I did some research online but it seems that some simgle engine aircrafts are pretty strict about luggage weight. Any advice on this will be greatly appreciated.

Internal flights on light aircrafts if 15Kg/33-lbs. (not 10Kg). Surprisingly, 33/lbs gives you plenty of stuff to pack in your main bag. You can take a small carryon, not too heavy on board, to be placed at your feet (few planes have overhead bins) and your camera stuff. However, if these two bags - carryon and camera equipment - appear to heavy they will weigh with your main bag and if over the 33/lbs (not 1 or 2 lbs) will ask for excess weight fee.

I will be also travelling from Kenya/Tanzania and the weight is 45 lbs WITH carry on. Anyone have tips, ideas or suggestions? Is there a fee for overweight. We were so proud last time in Botswana, because we came in clear, but my husband is worried about his Camera equipment alone. Worried I'll have to give up underwear for the Camera stuff(just kidding). Thanks.

We were a bit over the limit and pay 1 or 2 $US at Wilson in Nairobi.
Any way - I HATE travelling with lots of luggage and as sandi pointed out already - 15 kgs is a LOT! We are sometimes over the limit because of an extra duffel we fill with staff we leave behind with schools, orphanages or guides at camps.

Pure safari gear is not more than 12 kgs/person plus a photo gear backpack.

Remember: Most camps do the laundry (except undies) for you. So pack light! It's rewarding.

happy travel!

Between Kenya/Tanzania it's 20Kg/45-lbs. Internal either country is 15Kg/33-lbs. This includes main duffle, carryon and camera. However, unless the carryon and camera equip which you take on the plane looks obviously heavy, you might not get hit with excess fee.

If fee is required, it's $1-2 per Kg.

But, as above and other threads, 33/lbs is more than enough for a standard 10-14/day trip; I've done with less even on 3/week trips. You really don't need more changes of clothing than the longest time at any one stop, i.e., 3 or 4/days! Yeh, this isn't a resort with 3x/day changes or a cruise. Laundry, if not included, is inexpensive.

I flew through Kenya with way over the maximum weight allowed. Loads of camera equipment and a tent on the way to Tanzania. Everything from the US to London was on United then from London to Kenya to Tanzania was on Kenya air. Basically, as long as I was checked on from United Air, Kenya Air honored their rules and weight restrictions. I think I paid around $200 in Seattle originally for the extra weight. On the return trip I had to be more creative. A lot of my extra weight was carry ons.

Be aware, the smaller Kenya Air planes have very small overhead bins that would not hold my normal carry on bag. Thankfully, my flight was only half full so I could use some under seat space I wouldn't have had access to.

Something else to worry about in the airports....security guards being "friendly" making chit chat aren't really being friendly. They may request (demand) a tip for their time.

Have a great trip!
