The Norfolk Hotel in Nairobi, now under the auspices of the Fairmont Hotels, is in process of major refurbishing. Last major work done for the Norfolk's 2004 Centennial Aniversary. Current work is scheduled to be completed July 2008.
Hemingways at Mombassa is closing as 1st April, why or until.......... (unknown).
Mara Safari Club camp, also a Fairmont property has completed the work here, with many improvements... even pillow-top mattresses, larger decks so guests can take meals at their tents.
Mara Fig Tree camp, has added a few more 4WD vehicles for game drives.

Thanks for the updates, Sandi. Given the refurbishments going on at the Norfolk, would you recommend staying there (in July when upgrades are complete) or the Fairview (where we're booked). I suspect we'll stay with the Fairview because we really liked it last time, but would appreciate your thoughts.

The Fairview is lovely and priced right. If you've been before and enjoyed, I'd stay with this charming hotel.
As far as the Norfolk or most other hotels anywhere under construction of any kind, if you're out all day... then this shouldn't have an impact. Workers usually commence work at 8am and conclude by 5pm, but can never be guranteed. Work can be going on in one wing of a hotel, completely sealed from visitors and thus not an issue; at others, who knows what dust, equipment, supplies and other "stuff" along with noise might upset your stay. I'd probably choose another hotel. In your case, as above, stick with the Fairview.
You can always drop into the Norfolk for dinner at the Ibis or on the Delamere Terrace with little problem.

HOW is lovely and a favorite of mine. But, if this is for night of arrival with early departure next morning for safari... kind of expensive. Price, though, is decent for day-room on last day before evening homebound flight.
