I'm interested in trying out a village homestay followed by a safari in Kenya just dont know what it should cost and if the few quotations I have got are outrageous.

You could try this approach. Ask your agent to see if there are any families in some of the Maasai villages near the camps/lodges who would be interested in house guests.
Once I arranged a several-day stay on a whim after I had arrived in Kenya and it worked well. I enjoyed my stay so much I went back to visit the same family the next year. What made it work was that some of their teenage children were home from school and we could communicate in English. Without their English skills, it would have been a less meaningful visit. For one person I gave them about $100 for 2-3 days, 2 nights. If it worked for me last minute, I am sure you could plan something with an agent well in advance.
If you want more specifics, you can email me.

Habari yako. Karibu Kenya. I offer homestay in Nairobi but I could organise for you in the rural area at a reasonable rate. Homestay is the easiest way to interact with the community and learn more about the culture.

Please confirm how many days you will be at the homestay. Will you need any guide? I will charge 30$ per adult person ,children 20$ per day for the homestay which include dinner only. Transport will be catered by you .
